Tapered Roller Bearings FAG 33109

The FAG 33109 tapered roller bearing can accommodate high radial and single-direction axial loads whilst maintaining compact dimensions of 45 × 80 × 26 mm.

The 33109 tapered roller bearing is a single-row roller bearing in standard design, manufactured to standard tolerances in accordance with tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. Thanks to the line contact of the tapered rollers, this bearing design can withstand high forces in continuous industrial operation. As a complete tapered roller bearing, the assembly comprises the inner ring, the outer ring and the guided roller cage. This design is suitable for demanding shaft mountings in conventional mechanical engineering and drive technology.

What loads and applications does the 33109 tapered roller bearing handle?

This rolling bearing is primarily used when combined loads consisting of radial forces and unilateral axial forces act on a shaft. Typical applications include spur and bevel gearboxes, pump units, axle drives and general industrial gearboxes. As a single tapered roller bearing, by its very design, can only accommodate axial forces in one direction, the 33109 tapered roller bearing is usually fitted in practice in a mirror-image configuration opposite a second bearing to enable axial guidance of the shaft on both sides.

What function does the sheet steel cage fulfil during operation?

The fitted sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly along the raceway of the inner ring and prevents direct contact between the rollers. This cage design proves to be resistant to lubricants and vibrations. Furthermore, the design is rated for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees Celsius, meaning the bearing can be operated flexibly with standard industrial oils or greases.

What are the dimensions of the 33109 tapered roller bearing?

With a bore diameter of 45 mm, an outside diameter of 80 mm and a total width of 26 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised main dimensions. These specifications allow for replacement in gearbox and machine housings, provided that the mounting dimensions of the shaft and the housing seat are compatible with these dimensions.

Why can the 33109 tapered roller bearing be dismantled?

Due to their design, tapered roller bearings are not self-retaining. The inner ring, together with the set of rollers and the sheet steel cage, forms a single unit, whilst the outer ring can be removed separately. This feature facilitates assembly and disassembly, as both rings can be fitted into the housing and onto the shaft separately.

What does the tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1 mean?

This designation refers to the standard accuracy class for rolling bearings. Dimensional, geometric and running accuracy fall within the internationally defined standard tolerance. For the vast majority of applications in general mechanical and plant engineering, this level of precision is sufficient to ensure the bearings function correctly during normal operation.

How are the axial forces transmitted in the 33109 tapered roller bearing?

Axial forces are transmitted via the inclined raceways and the flange-guided contact of the tapered rollers. However, due to the contact angle, the bearing can only accommodate axial loads from one direction. For this reason, tapered roller bearings are usually mounted in pairs in an O or X arrangement to accommodate forces in both axial directions.

What is the temperature range for which the bearing is specified?

The operating temperature range is specified as -30 to +120 degrees Celsius. The metal components, such as bearing rings, rollers and the sheet steel cage, retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. When designing the lubrication system, lubricants should be selected whose specifications are tailored to the temperatures encountered during operation.

What should be borne in mind when lubricating an open bearing?

The bearing does not have any integrated seals. Before commissioning, the bearing must be lubricated with a suitable rolling-bearing grease or gear oil. To prevent the ingress of dirt particles and the loss of lubricant during operation, the bearing seat in the housing should be protected by external sealing elements such as shaft seals.
