The SKF 23240 CCK/W33 spherical roller bearing, measuring 200 × 360 × 128 mm, with a tapered bore and lubrication groove, provides reliable guidance under heavy loads.
The SKF 23240 CCK/W33 double-row self-aligning roller bearing is designed for demanding bearing applications involving high radial forces and axial forces acting in both directions. Manufactured from through-hardened standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), the open bearing accommodates operational misalignment between the inner and outer rings with low friction. The Explorer version is characterised by running accuracy of tolerance class P5 with standard dimensional accuracy PN. With its main dimensions, the component is primarily used in heavy machinery and in powertrains with shafts susceptible to deflection.
This rolling bearing is primarily suitable for industrial applications where heavy radial loads act on elastic shafts or housings with low torsional rigidity. Thanks to the hollow-spherical outer ring raceway, the component dynamically compensates for angular misalignment without causing edge pressures on the rollers. Typical applications include heavily loaded industrial gearboxes and mechanically stressed large-scale bearing arrangements subject to deflection. The open design allows for flexible integration into existing oil or grease lubrication systems within the respective overall plant.
The tapered inner ring bore with a taper ratio of 1:12 facilitates mounting on tapered shaft seats or using mounting and withdrawal sleeves. The remaining radial clearance can be precisely adjusted by carefully sliding the inner ring onto the shaft. The designation W33 indicates a circumferential lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring. This design directs the lubricant directly between the two sets of rollers, which simplifies lubricant replacement and aids heat dissipation during operation.
The spherical roller bearing has a bore of 200 mm, an outer diameter of 360 mm and a width of 128 mm. Due to these substantial dimensions and the corresponding weight, it is recommended that suitable lifting equipment and slings be used during installation.
The suffix describes key design features. CC stands for window-type sheet steel cages and a flangeless inner ring for roller guidance. The ‘K’ denotes the tapered bore with a 1:12 ratio for sleeve mounting. ‘W33’ refers to the lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring for direct lubricant supply.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +200 degrees. The dimensionally stable 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the robust sheet steel cage can withstand this range without any changes to their microstructure. In the case of continuously high operating temperatures, the thermal stability of the selected lubricant must be specifically tailored to the application.
A tapered bore with a 1:12 taper is used to ensure controlled reduction of radial play during assembly. The inner ring is driven hydraulically or mechanically onto a tension sleeve or a tapered shaft journal. This method ensures a firm press fit on smooth shafts without the need for shaft shoulders.
This bearing combines the dimensional accuracy of PN class with the enhanced running accuracy of tolerance class P5. Whilst the external dimensions comply with the standard tolerance, the rolling elements operate with reduced radial runout. This improves running smoothness and reduces vibrations at medium to high speeds.
As the bearing is designed as an open type, it requires initial greasing or connection to an oil lubrication system prior to commissioning. Lubricant enters the rolling element zone directly via the W33 lubrication groove in the outer ring, which also simplifies subsequent relubrication intervals within the housing.
