The SKF 6209 N deep groove ball bearing, measuring 45x85x19 mm and featuring a ring groove in the outer ring, offers a compact solution for axial positioning.
The 6209 N deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing manufactured by SKF, which primarily accommodates radial loads whilst also supporting moderate axial forces in both directions. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, this open bearing is characterised by its standardised ring groove in the outer ring. The combination of a 45 mm bore, an 85 mm outer diameter and a 19 mm width makes this component a versatile part in general machinery and gearbox construction.
Design engineers and maintenance technicians rely on this bearing when installation spaces need to be kept compact and a positive axial lock via the housing is required. Typical applications include compact gearbox designs and enclosed assemblies. As the bearing is of an open design, lubricants such as gear oil or grease can reach the rolling elements unhindered, which makes it suitable for use in enclosed housings.
The suffix ‘N’ denotes a circumferential groove on the outer ring’s outer surface. A suitable snap ring can be inserted into this groove to secure the bearing axially within the housing. This eliminates the need for complex housing shoulders or additional retaining caps, thereby simplifying designs. During assembly, care must be taken to ensure the housing is suitably sealed to prevent the ingress of dirt and the loss of lubricant in this open design.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 45 mm, an outer diameter of 85 mm and a total width of 19 mm. These standardised key dimensions allow for direct replacement in existing assemblies. The outer ring is also fitted with a standardised ring groove for axial retention.
The suffix ‘N’ indicates the presence of a ring groove in the outer ring of the rolling bearing. A suitable retaining ring can be fitted into this ring groove to lock the component axially in the housing. This design allows for compact housing bores without fixed stop edges.
The open design, which does not feature integrated cover or sealing discs, allows for the unhindered replacement of lubricants, as required in gearboxes with oil-bath lubrication. The bearing therefore requires an external housing seal to prevent the ingress of dirt particles and moisture.
The roller bearing is manufactured with standard radial clearance, which complies with the standard for conventional operating temperatures. It meets tolerance class P0/PN (equivalent to ABEC 1) and thus offers a defined concentricity for standard industrial applications.
The component is rated for a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees. This thermal resistance is based on the heat treatment of the 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel and the resistance of the steel sheet cage, provided the correct lubricant is selected.
Inside the bearing, a sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements along their raceway. Sheet steel cages offer adequate strength whilst being lightweight, and are designed to operate across the entire permissible temperature range.
