The FAG 608-C3 deep-groove ball bearing combines compact dimensions of 8 × 22 × 7 mm with a slightly increased radial clearance for temperature-sensitive shaft mountings.
The single-row deep groove ball bearing 608-C3 from FAG is designed primarily to accommodate radial loads as well as low axial forces at high speeds. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6, this component is characterised by precise running characteristics in tolerance class P0. The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements between the raceways with minimal vibration. Design engineers use this variant in compact devices and small drives where precise guidance within a confined installation space is essential.
The open deep-groove ball bearing 608-C3 proves particularly effective in compact rotary axes operating at medium to high speeds. Typical applications include small drives, compact axes and precision mechanical assemblies. As there are no abiding sealing discs to generate frictional heat, the bearing starts up with low friction.
In clean housings or oil-lubricated assemblies, the lubricant can be supplied unhindered. Maintenance engineers appreciate the straightforward relubrication during routine maintenance work.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This additional operating clearance compensates for thermal expansion when the shaft or inner ring heats up during operation, without the bearing becoming stressed. At the same time, the additional clearance helps to prevent seizing when fits with a fixed interference fit are selected.
During assembly, the open design must be taken into account: such designs require an external housing seal to protect against dirt particles, ensuring that the raceways remain protected.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 8 mm, an outside diameter of 22 mm and a width of 7 mm. These dimensions correspond to the 608 series. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a ring groove, which facilitates centred installation in smooth housing bores.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with standard conditions. This ensures there is sufficient clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways should heat build up during operation or should tight fits cause the inner ring to expand. This prevents the bearing from becoming prematurely stressed due to temperature differences between the shaft and the housing.
An open bearing does not have any sealing lips or cover plates that come into contact with the shaft. This results in minimal friction losses, which facilitates high speeds and smooth start-up. This design is suitable for protected installation spaces where lubrication is provided via the oil circuit or by a targeted supply of lubricant from the surrounding unit.
The component is designed for an operating range of -30 to +120 degrees Celsius. Both the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability within this range. At higher temperatures, users should ensure they use suitable lubricants that are approved for the relevant thermal environment.
Tolerance class P0 (equivalent to PN or ABEC 1) sets the standard for dimensional and concentricity accuracy in rolling bearings. It provides a defined fit accuracy for standard shaft and housing tolerances in mechanical engineering. This accuracy grade reliably meets the requirements of many industrial rotary axes.
The bearing is fitted with a sheet steel cage. This maintains an even spacing between the balls and reliably separates the rolling elements. The sheet steel cage is lightweight yet robust and can withstand vibrations and speed fluctuations within a defined temperature range.
