The SKF 6404 single-row deep groove ball bearing accommodates both radial and axial loads and has a bore diameter of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 72 mm and a width of 19 mm.
The 6404 deep-groove ball bearing is a versatile open-type rolling bearing. Thanks to its deep raceway geometry, this bearing accommodates radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions. Manufactured from 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel, SKF’s design provides a solid foundation for continuous industrial operation. Thanks to the standard tolerance P0, the ball bearing can be integrated directly into standardised housings, whilst the standard radial clearance is designed for normal operating temperatures between –20 and +120 degrees.
Applications involving high radial loads with a comparatively compact shaft diameter represent the primary area of use. The outer diameter of 72 mm with a 20-mm bore provides the component with stable guidance. The guided sheet-steel cage is designed for demanding speed ranges, and as there are no sliding seals, no additional friction losses occur.
The open design, without integrated cover or sealing plates, allows for the direct supply of lubricants from the system, for example via oil circulation or immersion lubrication. This results in low friction coefficients and moderate operating temperatures during continuous operation. Surrounding seals in the housing protect the bearing location from dirt and moisture. For applications with standard requirements, the Normal (PN) tolerance class in conjunction with the standard bearing clearance is sufficient, as no thermal expansion allowance is required.
With a bore of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 72 mm and a width of 19 mm, this version is one of the more robust bearings for 20-mm shafts. Due to this width-to-diameter ratio, the bearing can withstand higher radial forces than lighter series.
An open bearing has no integrated seals or cover plates at the ends. The rolling elements and the sheet steel cage are exposed, which minimises friction and allows for use in oil-lubricated housings. Protection against contamination must be provided by the surrounding housing structure.
The bearing is manufactured with standard radial bearing clearance. This design offers a good balance between positioning accuracy and smooth running at normal operating temperatures. It is suitable for standard fits, provided that no thermal differences between the inner and outer rings require increased clearance.
The permissible temperature range is from -20 to +120 degrees Celsius. Both the 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel used and the sheet steel cage are designed to withstand these temperatures. A lubricant that retains its viscous properties within these limits is crucial for continuous operation.
Classification according to tolerance class P0 (corresponding to standard tolerance PN or ABEC 1) defines the permissible dimensional and runout tolerances. It reflects the industry standard for industrial applications and allows installation on standard shafts and in common bearing seats without the need for a specific fit selection.
As open bearings are left unfilled ex works, the choice of lubricant depends on the design of the unit. In enclosed gearboxes, lubrication is usually provided by the surrounding industrial gear oil. For separate bearing housings, a rolling-element bearing grease suited to the rotational speed and ambient temperature is recommended.
