The FAG NU2217 -E-XL-M1-C3 cylindrical roller bearing is a single-row non-locating bearing with a brass cage and increased radial clearance for radial loads, with dimensions of 85x150x36 mm.
As an open roller bearing, the FAG NU2217 -E-XL-M1-C3 cylindrical roller bearing can accommodate high radial forces. With key dimensions of 85 mm bore, 150 mm outside diameter and 36 mm width, this design combines high rigidity with precise roller guidance. Thanks to the NU design, the inner ring can be removed from both sides, which facilitates the separate installation of both bearing rings in mechanical and plant engineering. The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +150 degrees.
As a pure support bearing, this design accommodates high radial forces and compensates for axial thermal expansion of the shaft without constraint. The flangeless inner ring allows for displacement in both directions relative to the roller cage. Designs often combine the bearing with a separate fixed bearing, which provides axial guidance. As this is an open design without an integrated seal, lubrication is provided via the housing system, for example in gearbox or heavy-duty drive applications.
The M1 version features a solid brass cage which retains its dimensional stability even under vibration or rapid speed changes and guides the cylindrical rollers precisely. The slightly increased radial clearance (C3) counteracts any tightening of the bearing caused by heating during operation or tight fits. Before installation, the housing tolerances must be adjusted to tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1. For use in thermally stressed units, the bearing clearance offers an extended operating range up to +150 degrees.
The bearing is manufactured with a bore of 85 mm, an outer diameter of 150 mm and a width of 36 mm. In the NU design, the outer ring has two fixed flanges, whilst the inner ring is flangeless and can be removed from both sides. This allows both bearing rings to be fitted and serviced separately.
C3 denotes increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard basic clearance. This additional clearance between the rolling elements and raceways compensates for thermal expansion caused by temperature differences between the inner and outer rings and for the constriction resulting from tight fits. The bearing thus retains the necessary mobility even during operation.
The solid brass cage guides the cylindrical rollers with minimal wear and maintains a uniform spacing between the rolling elements. Compared with simple sheet metal cages, the brass material offers greater resistance to shock loads and high acceleration forces. Furthermore, the cage material ensures good emergency running properties when lubricated with lubricating oil or grease.
Open cylindrical roller bearings are designed for environments in which the machine housing acts as a seal against dust and moisture. As there are no abiding sealing washers, less frictional heat is generated at the bearing location. At the same time, the open design allows for the unimpeded flow of gearbox oil or direct access for operational relubrication during maintenance intervals.
The permissible temperature range is between -30 and +150 degrees Celsius. The dimensionally stable components made of roller bearing steel, as well as the brass cage, retain their dimensional accuracy within this temperature range. The choice of a suitable lubricant, approved for the respective operating temperature, is crucial for correct operation at extreme temperatures.
A NU bearing supports the shaft exclusively in the radial direction and does not absorb any axial forces. As the inner ring is ground smooth throughout, the rollers slide axially along the raceway when the shaft length changes. A fixed bearing, on the other hand, locks the shaft against axial displacement on both sides. In most cases, a shaft design combines a NU non-locating bearing with a separate fixed bearing.
