The FAG NJ232 -E-XL-M1-C3 single-row cylindrical roller bearing serves as a support bearing with a brass cage, measuring 160 x 290 x 48 mm, for heavy radial loads.
The NJ232 -E-XL-M1-C3 cylindrical roller bearing from FAG Rolling Bearings is designed as a single-row support bearing for heavy radial loads. Due to the NJ design, the outer ring has two fixed flanges, whilst the inner ring has one fixed flange and is removable on one side. This design also accommodates unidirectional axial forces and allows for axial displacement in the opposite direction. With key dimensions of a 160 mm bore, 290 mm outer diameter and 48 mm width, this roller bearing is widely used in industrial mechanical engineering.
This single-row roller bearing is primarily used where high radial forces are present and axial forces from one direction need to be absorbed. Typical applications include heavy-duty industrial gearboxes and mechanical drive units. Thanks to its solid brass cage, the bearing is suitable for dynamic loads and vibrations. As the bearing is of an open design, lubrication is supplied via the surrounding housing using lubricating oil or grease.
The solid brass cage guides the rollers precisely and is suitable for demanding operating conditions. The increased radial clearance (C3) compensates for thermal expansion that may occur during operation within a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. Tight fits on the shaft and housing reduce the operating clearance when installed, so that the C3 clearance prevents the rollers from seizing. The outer ring is designed without a lubrication groove or lubrication bore and therefore requires external housing lubrication.
Designs with the designation letter NJ have two fixed flanges on the outer ring and one fixed flange on the inner ring. This allows the unit to function as a thrust bearing: it transmits high radial forces and supports the shaft axially in one direction. In the opposite direction, the bearing compensates for axial length changes without restriction, as the inner ring can be removed from one side.
The component has an internal diameter of 160 mm, an external diameter of 290 mm and a width of 48 mm. The manufacturing tolerances comply with the standard tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1. These standardised dimensions allow for a precise fit when replacing components during maintenance work on existing shaft seats and housing bores in industrial applications.
The suffix C3 indicates a larger radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This increased clearance between the rollers and raceways prevents stress build-up when components expand due to friction or ambient heat. Similarly, the C3 bearing clearance compensates for any constriction caused by tight press fits in the shaft or housing.
Compared with simple sheet metal cages, brass cages offer greater stability when subjected to vibrations and dynamic impact forces. The material is characterised by good run-on properties and high strength. This makes this design particularly suitable for heavy-duty industrial applications involving continuous high loads and demanding operating conditions.
As this bearing is manufactured without integrated seals, lubricant reaches the rolling elements and raceways unimpeded. The outer ring has no lubrication groove or lubrication bore. The lubricant must therefore be supplied via the housing. Furthermore, the open design requires external seals in the bearing housing to prevent the ingress of dirt particles.
The permissible temperature range is from -30 to +150 degrees Celsius. Both the dimensionally stable bearing rings and the robust brass cage are designed to withstand this temperature range. When designing the bearing arrangement, care must be taken to ensure that the selected lubricant – whether grease or lubricating oil – is also suitable for the prevailing operating temperature.
