The FAG NU2218 -E-XL-M1-C3 cylindrical roller bearing, measuring 90x160x40 mm and featuring a brass cage, offers high radial load-carrying capacity for demanding industrial applications.
The FAG NU2218 -E-XL-M1-C3 cylindrical roller bearing, as a single-row roller bearing, primarily accommodates high radial loads. In the NU design, the outer ring has two fixed flanges, whilst the inner ring is flangeless and removable from both sides. During operation, this design functions purely as a non-locating bearing, thereby allowing thermal-induced changes in shaft length to be compensated for without restriction. Design engineers and maintenance personnel rely on this rolling bearing when a rigid and high-load-capacity bearing arrangement is required for shaft diameters of 90 mm.
This cylindrical roller bearing is suitable for bearing arrangements where high radial forces act on the shaft and housing and axial length changes must be compensated for. Typical applications include heavily loaded industrial drives and heavy-duty machine mountings subject to dynamic vibration and impact forces. The robust M1 brass cage stabilises the roller set even under high acceleration forces. As the inner ring can be fitted separately, the bearing also simplifies installation and inspection processes in confined spaces.
During design, the cage type and bearing clearance determine suitability for thermal and dynamic operating conditions. The solid M1 brass cage guides the cylindrical rollers precisely and reliably withstands mechanical shock loads as well as high speeds. The increased radial clearance (C3) compensates for thermal expansion that may occur at operating temperatures of up to +150 degrees or due to tight bearing seat fits. Manufacture to tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1) also ensures defined dimensional accuracy during installation.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 160 mm and a width of 40 mm. These key dimensions determine the required installation space on the shaft and within the housing. Thanks to the standardised tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1, the component fits precisely into standardised bearing seats in machines and units.
The designation NU refers to a cylindrical roller bearing whose outer ring has two fixed flanges, whilst the inner ring has no flanges. This allows the inner ring to be removed from either side. The bearing functions purely as a non-locating bearing, transmitting only radial forces and compensating for axial shaft movements with low friction within the bearing itself.
The designation C3 indicates increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This additional clearance between the rollers and raceways prevents the bearing from seizing up should thermal expansion during operation or tight fits on the shaft and housing reduce the radial clearance. This helps to protect against premature overload.
The suffix M1 denotes a solid brass window cage that is guided by the rolling elements. Brass cages offer high resistance to vibrations, shocks and high accelerations. Furthermore, the material is characterised by favourable emergency running properties and stable thermal behaviour within the permissible temperature range.
As this is an open bearing without integrated sealing washers, it requires an external lubrication system using grease or lubricating oil. At the same time, separate seals, such as shaft seals, must be fitted within the housing. The bearing is designed for an operating temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees, to which the lubricant used must be adapted.
The design allows the inner and outer rings to be fitted separately. You can press the inner ring onto the shaft separately and insert the outer ring, together with the roller set, into the housing. During final assembly, both components are simply slid together. This simplifies maintenance work and minimises the risk of damage to the raceways during assembly.
