Axial Deep Groove Ball B. SKF 51308

The SKF 51308 single-direction axial deep groove ball bearing accommodates pure axial loads in one direction and measures 40x78x26 mm.

The SKF 51308 axial deep-groove ball bearing is designed as a single-direction axial bearing and accommodates axial forces in a defined axial direction. The component consists of a shaft ring, a housing ring and a guided ball cage made from standard rolling bearing steel 100Cr6. With dimensions of a 40 mm bore, 78 mm outer diameter and 26 mm height, the rolling bearing provides axial support for rotating shafts against a housing. Thanks to its separable design, you can mount the individual bearing discs and the ball cage independently of one another onto the shaft.

What loads and installation conditions apply to the 51308 axial deep-groove ball bearing?

The 51308 axial deep groove ball bearing accommodates axial forces in one axial direction only. The bearing supports axial forces from rotating shafts but must not be subjected to radial loads. If combined forces occur, the bearing must be used in combination with a separate radial bearing. Due to the flat design of the housing flange, this model is not angle-adjustable. The contact surfaces in the housing and on the shaft must be precisely aligned at right angles to the axis of rotation.

What does the single-direction operation mean for design and installation?

The single-direction operation means that this bearing can only accommodate axial forces from a defined direction. If the direction of the force changes, the housing flange will lift off, which is why a continuous minimum axial load should be applied during operation. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements within a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees Celsius. As this version is supplied without an additional shim, the housing disc rests directly against the machine housing. Clean mating surfaces are required to prevent the discs – which cannot be adjusted for angular misalignment – from tilting.

What are the dimensions of the 51308 axial deep-groove ball bearing?

With a bore diameter of 40 mm, an outside diameter of 78 mm and a height of 26 mm, the bearing complies with standardised dimensions. These dimensions refer to the assembled unit comprising the shaft washer, housing washer and ball cage. Before installation, the installation space on the shaft and the bearing seat in the housing must be checked for dimensional accuracy.

Can the 51308 axial deep-groove ball bearing withstand radial forces?

No, axial deep-groove ball bearings of this type are designed exclusively to transmit purely axial forces. Radial loads result in uneven running and premature wear of the raceways. If radial forces occur in the bearing arrangement, these must be absorbed by a separate radial bearing on the shaft.

What is the permissible temperature range for the bearing?

The bearing has a permissible operating temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees Celsius. The components made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability within this range. When designing the bearing, the thermal operating limits of the lubricant used must be taken into account, as the lubricant helps to determine the actual temperature range of the bearing location.

What does the tolerance class P0 / PN or ABEC 1 mean?

The designation P0, or standard tolerance (PN), corresponds to the basic accuracy specified in current rolling bearing standards and is equivalent to the ABEC 1 classification. It indicates that the dimensional, geometric and running accuracy of the bearing rings meet standard requirements in mechanical engineering. For general industrial applications, this tolerance class offers reliable fit accuracy without the need for high-precision grades.

How does the bearing compensate for misalignment of the shaft?

Due to its design, the bearing does not compensate for misalignment, as the housing flange is designed with a flat contact surface. Angular misalignment between the shaft and the housing bore cannot be automatically compensated for. To prevent edge running and uneven loading of the rolling elements, the mating surfaces must be machined at right angles and the bearing assembly must be fitted with precise alignment.

What are the characteristics of the sheet steel cage that has been fitted?

The integrated sheet steel cage keeps the rolling elements at a uniform distance and prevents the balls from coming into direct contact with one another. It is characterised by its low weight and high mechanical strength. Within the operating temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees Celsius, the sheet steel cage retains its dimensional stability and is suitable for standard lubricants used in mechanical engineering.
