The FAG 3318-C3 angular contact ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing with a 90 mm bore, an outer diameter of 190 mm and an increased C3 clearance.
The FAG 3318-C3 angular contact ball bearing accommodates high radial forces as well as axial forces on both sides simultaneously. Thanks to its double-row design made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), the construction offers a compact unit compared to two paired single bearings. Manufactured to tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1) and guided by a robust sheet steel cage, this rolling bearing – which has no integrated seals – is primarily used where external lubrication or an oil bath is provided.
Typical applications include bearing arrangements subject to combined radial and axial loads in general mechanical engineering, as well as designs with increased thermal requirements. As the bearing transmits loads in both axial directions, it provides stable guidance for the shaft against axial displacement. The operating temperature range of –20 to +150 degrees covers a wide range of thermal conditions. As it is an open bearing without a flange or groove on the outer ring, it can be fitted directly into housing bores and lubricated externally.
The suffix ‘C3’ indicates increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This internal clearance serves to compensate for operational temperature differences between the shaft and the housing, as well as for fit allowances during installation, without causing undesirable stresses. During design, care must be taken to ensure that the lubricant is suitable for the open design and the operating temperatures. For maintenance and relubrication, a clean environment is recommended to prevent dirt particles from entering the unsealed interior of the bearing.
With a bore of 90 mm, an outside diameter of 190 mm and a width of 73 mm, this bearing complies with the standard dimensions of the 3318 series. The precision-machined rings, made from 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel, comply with tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1 and feature a cylindrical bore without a flange.
Bearing clearance class C3 denotes increased radial clearance prior to installation. This is advantageous where temperature differences occur between the inner and outer rings during operation, or where tight fits on the shaft and housing reduce the bearing clearance. This helps to prevent the rolling elements from becoming stressed during operation.
Two rows of balls with angles of inclination opposite to one another enable the bearing to accommodate both radial and axial forces in both directions. The double-row design requires less axial installation space than a bearing arrangement comprising two individual angular contact ball bearings of the same load capacity.
As the open bearing does not have any integrated contact seals, a lubricant from the surrounding system is required, for example via an oil bath or an application-specific grease fill. The unsealed design allows lubricant to enter and can be adapted to an operating temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees.
The bearing is fitted with a sheet steel cage which guides the rolling elements and keeps them at a uniform distance apart. Sheet steel cages are suitable for the specified operating temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees and are resistant to common mineral and synthetic lubricants.
Rings and balls are made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6). This through-hardened material offers high dimensional stability and compressive strength across the entire specified temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees, making it suitable for use under combined loads.
