The SKF 30317 tapered roller bearing (85x180x44.5 mm) can accommodate high combined radial and axial loads and features a sheet steel cage.
The SKF 30317 single-row tapered roller bearing is designed for industrial applications in which radial and unilateral axial forces act simultaneously. As a complete rolling bearing, this design comprises the inner ring with a set of rollers and the corresponding outer ring. With a bore of 85 mm, an outside diameter of 180 mm and a width of 44.5 mm, this standard design is suitable for a wide range of bearing arrangements in mechanical engineering and drive technology. The optimised dimensions ensure a stable bearing arrangement under demanding operating conditions.
In industrial drive technology, the single-row tapered roller bearing 30317 withstands high radial forces as well as axial forces from one direction. As the axial load capacity is design-related and acts on one side only, two bearings are frequently mounted in pairs facing each other in designs. The separate assembly of the inner ring (including the roller cage) and the outer ring facilitates fitting into the housing and onto the shaft. This design ensures that the supported shafts exhibit high rigidity under combined loads.
In SKF’s Explorer version, the bearing is designed for optimised friction characteristics and a harmonious contact profile between the tapered rollers and raceways. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly and is suitable for an operating temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. Manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1, this roller bearing fits precisely into existing assemblies. During commissioning, care must be taken to ensure an appropriate lubrication supply for the application.
The bearing has a bore of 85 mm, an outer diameter of 180 mm and a total width of 44.5 mm. These main metric dimensions determine the interfaces with the shaft and the housing. Before installation, the bearing seat and the housing bore should be carefully adjusted to these dimensions.
Single-row tapered roller bearings are designed to accommodate both radial forces and single-sided axial forces simultaneously. The inclined raceways transmit the forces at a specific contact angle. To enable axial guidance in both directions, two tapered roller bearings are typically arranged in a mirror-image O or X configuration.
The bearing is specified for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. Within these temperature limits, the components and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability. When selecting the lubricant, care must be taken to ensure that its operating range covers the operating temperatures encountered in the application.
The designation ‘Tolerance Class P0/PN’ or ‘ABEC 1’ defines the permissible dimensional and geometric deviations for the bore, outer diameter and concentricity. This specification corresponds to the standard tolerance commonly used in industrial applications. It meets the typical requirements in general mechanical engineering and in standard gearboxes.
The dimensionally stable cage, made of sheet steel, keeps the conical rollers at a uniform distance from one another. This prevents the rolling elements from coming into contact with one another, reduces friction and ensures an even load distribution across the raceway. Furthermore, the cage guides the rollers along the inner ring in such a way that they cannot be lost.
Due to their design, tapered roller bearings can be dismantled. The outer ring can be fitted separately from the inner ring, which is firmly connected to the roller ring and cage. This ability to separate the components facilitates installation in machine housings as well as subsequent maintenance and inspection work on the shaft bearing arrangement.
