The 30230 tapered roller bearing from SKF Wälzlager, with a 150 mm bore and an outer diameter of 270 mm, accommodates high radial loads as well as unilateral axial forces.
The single-row tapered roller bearing 30230 accommodates heavy radial loads whilst simultaneously withstanding axial forces from one direction. The truncated cone-shaped rolling elements roll on inclined raceways, ensuring that the forces acting on them are distributed evenly across the load-bearing surfaces. Designed as a complete tapered roller bearing comprising an inner ring, an outer ring and a guided set of rollers, the bearing allows for the separate assembly of both bearing rings. This facilitates precise installation in robust gearbox units and industrial shaft arrangements.
It is particularly suitable for applications where combined loads consisting of radial forces and axial thrust forces occur. As this single-row tapered roller bearing, by design, can only accommodate axial forces in one direction, in practice it is usually fitted in a mirror-image pair with a second bearing. Such a paired arrangement supports alternating loads in both directions and ensures precise guidance of rotating machine shafts.
The bearing features a robust sheet steel cage that keeps the tapered rollers at a uniform distance apart and is designed for a temperature range of –30 to +120 degrees. As the inner ring with roller set and the outer ring can be separated from one another, both rings can be fitted independently. During final assembly, the required operating clearance or preload is precisely adjusted via the mating bearing. Manufacture to tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1 defines precise dimensional and geometric tolerances for standard-compliant bearing seats.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 150 mm, an external diameter of 270 mm and a total width of 49 mm. These standardised key dimensions define the required installation space within the machine housing and allow for replacement with units of identical construction that comply with metric standard dimensions.
The permissible temperature range extends from -30 to +120 degrees. Within these thermal limits, both the integrated sheet steel cage and the rings retain their dimensional stability. During the design phase, engineers check whether the lubricant and external sealing elements are also approved for the operating temperatures encountered.
In single-row tapered roller bearings, the inner ring, together with the set of rollers and the cage, forms a single, integral unit, whilst the outer ring remains removable without a flange. This design simplifies mechanical assembly, as the inner ring and outer ring can be pressed on or fitted into the housing seat independently of one another.
The P0 tolerance class corresponds to the international standard class ABEC 1 for standard rolling bearings. It specifies binding limit values for dimensional and concentricity accuracies. For standard applications in industrial mechanical engineering, this precision grade enables precise shaft guidance whilst meeting cost-effective fit requirements.
The design transmits both radial loads and axial forces acting in a single direction. The angle of inclination of the raceways ensures that combined loads are transferred linearly to the rolling elements. To support the shaft in both directions, this bearing design is usually paired with a matching counter-bearing mounted in a mirror-image configuration on the same shaft.
Inside the bearing, a dimensionally stable sheet steel cage is in operation. This cage keeps the tapered rollers spaced apart, prevents direct contact between the rolling elements and secures the set of rollers to the inner ring so that they cannot be lost. The material withstands continuous mechanical stress within the permissible temperature range.
