The SKF 23948 CC/W33 spherical roller bearing, with dimensions of 240 × 320 × 60 mm, provides a high-load-carrying bearing whilst simultaneously compensating for misalignment.
The SKF 23948 CC/W33 double-row self-aligning roller bearing has a bore diameter of 240 mm, an outer diameter of 320 mm and a width of 60 mm. As an open roller bearing made from standard bearing steel 100Cr6, the design accommodates high radial forces as well as combined axial loads. The bearing automatically compensates for static and dynamic misalignments or shaft deflection thanks to the spherical raceway in the outer ring. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the symmetrical rollers and ensures smooth running.
Design engineers primarily use this self-aligning roller bearing on large-diameter shafts where angular misalignment occurs between the shaft and the housing. Typical applications include bearing arrangements subject to high loads and featuring long shafts where deflection is to be expected. The open design, combined with a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees, enables use in thermally demanding environments. The lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring allows the lubricant to reach directly between the rolling elements.
The suffix W33 denotes an annular lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring, which facilitates relubrication whilst the bearing is installed. In addition to dimensional accuracy class PN, this bearing features increased running accuracy of class P5, which reduces radial runout during operation. When designing the bearing, the standard radial bearing clearance must be taken into account: the choice of fit and thermal expansion of the shaft influence the operating clearance. As there are no integrated seals, the surrounding housing provides protection against contamination.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 240 mm, an external diameter of 320 mm and a width of 60 mm. Before fitting, check the available installation space and the shaft seats to ensure that the required fit dimensions of the connecting structure are maintained.
The designation CC refers to an internal design featuring window-like sheet steel cages and symmetrical rollers without a fixed contact point on the inner ring. The designation W33 describes a lubrication groove with lubrication holes incorporated into the outer ring. This design ensures that lubricant is distributed directly within the working area of the rolling elements.
The roller bearing, made from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel, is specified for an operating temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees. If operating at higher temperatures, please note that the selected lubricant and any external seals in the bearing housing must also be designed for this temperature range.
In this bearing, the dimensional accuracy is maintained to the standard PN grade, whilst the running accuracy corresponds to the tighter tolerance class P5. A P5 running accuracy means lower radial and axial runout errors in the inner and outer rings. This promotes smooth running when the shaft is rotating.
As an open bearing, the spherical roller bearing has no integrated sealing washers. This design allows for flexible lubrication with grease or oil via the central W33 lubrication groove. To prevent the ingress of dirt or moisture, the surrounding bearing housing must be fitted with suitable external sealing elements.
Normal bearing clearance refers to the radial clearance between the rollers and the raceways as supplied by the manufacturer prior to installation. As tight fits on the 240 mm shaft reduce the bearing clearance, sufficient clearance is maintained during operation to allow for unimpeded rolling motion and to accommodate thermal expansion.
