The SKF 22224 EK/C3 self-aligning roller bearing, with a 120 mm tapered bore and C3 clearance, offers high load-carrying capacity in the face of shaft deflection and misalignment.
The SKF 22224 EK/C3 self-aligning roller bearing is designed for demanding bearing applications involving high radial and axial loads. The design automatically compensates for angular misalignment between the inner and outer rings during operation. The open bearing, made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6, has main dimensions of 120x215x58 mm. It withstands operating temperatures from -30 to +200 degrees Celsius and is suitable for continuous industrial loads in heavy machinery.
This roller bearing is particularly suitable for demanding applications involving combined forces. It accommodates high radial main loads whilst simultaneously withstanding axial forces in both directions. As the outer ring features a continuous hollow-spherical raceway, misalignment and elastic shaft deflection do not result in harmful edge stresses. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the symmetrical rollers precisely and keeps friction within the bearing to a minimum.
The EK design features a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12. This allows the bearing to be mounted either directly onto a tapered shaft seat or onto cylindrical shafts using a mounting or withdrawal sleeve. The slightly increased radial clearance (C3) compensates for the radial expansion of the inner ring when the fit is tightened. An integrated lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring also facilitates targeted relubrication within the housing.
The designation EK denotes a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12 and a sheet steel cage. This design allows for mounting on tapered shaft seats or, using clamping and withdrawal sleeves, on cylindrical shafts.
With bearing clearance class C3, the bearing has greater radial clearance than the standard version. When the tapered inner ring is pressed onto the shaft, it expands elastically, thereby reducing the bearing clearance. The increased bearing clearance helps to ensure that sufficient operating clearance is maintained even after the bearing has been firmly mounted and during thermal expansion in operation.
With a tapered bore of 120 mm, the outer diameter is 215 mm and the width across flats is 58 mm. SKF manufactures this standard version with normal dimensional accuracy (PN) and increased running accuracy to tolerance class P5.
Fresh lubricant is fed directly between the two rows of rollers via a lubrication groove incorporated into the outer ring, which features several lubrication holes. The open self-aligning roller bearing does not have its own seals, which is why the bearing housing must be protected against dirt and moisture during operation by means of an external housing seal.
The permissible temperature range is from -30 to +200 degrees Celsius for the version made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. The integrated sheet steel cage is also designed to withstand these thermal conditions, provided that the selected lubricant covers the operating range.
