The SKF 23220 CC/C4W33 spherical roller bearing, measuring 100 × 180 × 60.3 mm, is designed to compensate for misalignment under high radial loads.
The 23220 CC/C4W33 self-aligning roller bearing is a double-row roller bearing for demanding industrial applications involving combined loads. With a bore of 100 mm, an outer diameter of 180 mm and a width of 60.3 mm, this open bearing accommodates high radial forces as well as axial forces in both directions. The manufacturer, SKF, produces the bearing from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel with a robust sheet steel cage. This design covers a wide temperature range from –30 to +200 degrees Celsius and is suitable for demanding operating environments in mechanical and plant engineering.
The design is suitable for demanding bearing applications involving combined loads, where shaft deflection or misalignment may occur. Thanks to the hollow-spherical outer ring raceway, the roller set adjusts to angular movements. This enables the bearing to continue operating without harmful edge stresses, even when there are dynamic misalignments between the shaft and housing.
This design has proven its worth in industrial drives with varying misalignments and high radial loads. Thanks to the lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring (feature W33), lubricant is fed directly into the bearing interior, which reduces maintenance requirements during operation.
The significantly increased C4 radial clearance provides more internal operating clearance than the standard clearance. This prevents the rolling elements from becoming jammed if significant temperature differences arise between the inner ring and outer ring during operation, or if tight fits cause the inner ring to expand. The P5 precision grade also ensures smooth and low-vibration operation.
For open bearings, ensure a suitable external housing seal is fitted to prevent the ingress of dirt. During assembly, use the integrated lubrication groove in the outer ring to ensure even distribution of grease or oil across the entire bearing width.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 100 mm, an outside diameter of 180 mm and a width of 60.3 mm. These key dimensions determine the required installation space on the shaft and within the housing. Before installation, check that the shaft seat and the housing bore fit these reference dimensions accurately.
The designation C4 indicates a significantly increased radial clearance compared with the standard clearance CN and class C3. This increased radial clearance is recommended for high operating temperatures, significant temperature differences between the shaft and housing, or in the case of tight press fits, to prevent the bearing from becoming distorted under load.
The suffix W33 indicates a circumferential lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring of the bearing. These channels allow grease or lubricating oil to be applied directly and evenly between the two rows of rollers during maintenance. This facilitates relubrication whilst the bearing is installed, via grease nipples on the housing.
As an open bearing, this design has no integrated sealing washers. This makes the bearing suitable for lubricating oil circuits or external housing seals such as labyrinth or felt seals. Furthermore, the open design allows for unimpeded lubricant exchange and extends the range of applications at operating temperatures of up to +200 degrees Celsius.
In this bearing, the dimensional accuracy complies with the PN standard, whilst the running accuracy is manufactured to the tighter P5 tolerance class. As a result, the concentricity of the inner and outer rings exhibits lower radial and axial deviations. This reduces vibrations and ensures smooth operation at higher speeds.
The bearing, made from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel with a sheet steel cage, is specified for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +200 degrees Celsius. To ensure reliable operation within this wide temperature range, it is essential to select a temperature-resistant lubricant and to monitor the thermal linear expansion of the shaft.
