The FAG 2218-TVH self-aligning ball bearing (90x160x40 mm) compensates for misalignment and guides shafts using a flexible polyamide cage.
The 2218-TVH self-aligning ball bearing provides designers with a double-row rolling bearing for demanding shaft support applications. The shared hollow-spherical raceway in the outer ring allows the inner ring to angle outwards, enabling the design to reliably accommodate misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. FAG manufactures this bearing from standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6 with standard radial clearance and a cylindrical bore. This design is suitable for applications where housing misalignment occurs due to manufacturing tolerances or where misalignment arises during operation.
The use of this self-aligning bearing is particularly recommended where elastic deformations of the shaft or misalignments between the bearing seats occur. Typical applications include long shafts and elastic support structures. As the bearing distributes radial loads across two rows of balls, the design absorbs continuous transverse forces. The angular-contact design protects the raceways from sharp load peaks and ensures smooth shaft rotation even in the event of misalignment.
The TVH suffix denotes a solid polyamide cage which guides the balls precisely and contributes to smooth running. The material dampens sudden accelerations, reduces operating noise and keeps frictional resistance low. The bearing is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. As it features an open design without an integrated seal, the lubricant can be flexibly adapted to the operating conditions and integrated into an existing lubrication system.
This double-row roller bearing features a continuous hollow-spherical raceway in the outer ring. This allows the inner ring, together with the ball cage, to pivot in order to compensate for misalignment or elastic shaft deflection. The 100Cr6 material gives the components high strength under alternating radial loads.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 160 mm and a width across flats of 40 mm. It has a standard cylindrical bore for direct mounting on stepped shafts and complies with the specified key dimensions for this size.
The abbreviation TVH refers to a guided solid cage made of polyamide. This type of cage reduces the weight of the rotating components, minimises sliding friction losses on contact with the balls and contributes to the smooth guidance of the two rows of rolling elements.
The open design, which does not incorporate sealing washers, allows grease or lubricating oil to circulate freely within the bearing seat. This is advantageous for applications that are protected by external seals in the bearing housing or are connected to a continuous oil circulation lubrication system.
The permissible operating range is between -30 and +120 degrees. This temperature range is primarily limited by the polyamide cage, which retains its dimensional stability within these thermal limits and ensures the safe guidance of the rolling elements.
Tolerance class P0 (equivalent to PN or ABEC 1) denotes the standard tolerance for industrial roller bearings. It defines precise dimensional and geometric limits for the bore, outer diameter and axial runout, which are sufficient for standard machinery and industrial drives.
