The double-row self-aligning ball bearing 1208 -TVH-C3, measuring 40x80x18 mm, compensates for angular misalignment and, thanks to its C3 clearance, allows for movement when the bearing heats up.
The 1208 -TVH-C3 self-aligning ball bearing from FAG Wälzlager is a double-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) with a 40 mm bore. Thanks to the shared spherical raceway in the outer ring, the bearing automatically compensates for misalignment and angular errors. Fitted with a lightweight polyamide cage and extended C3 radial clearance, this design is suitable for industrial applications subject to thermal fluctuations. It is manufactured to tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1), which facilitates a precise fit for replacement in repair work and series production.
This double-row roller bearing is primarily used where misalignment exists between housing positions or where shafts deflect elastically under load. Typical applications include bearing arrangements with longer spans or separate housings. As this is an open bearing without sealing washers, designers incorporate the component into oil- or grease-lubricated housings with external seals. The permissible temperature range is from –30 to +120 degrees.
The C3 designation indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This clearance helps to prevent the rolling elements from jamming when tight bearing seats reduce the radial clearance or when temperature differences occur between the inner and outer rings. The polyamide cage (suffix TVH) guides the balls in both rows with low friction and low noise, whilst reducing the weight of the component. Before installation, ensure that the operating temperature remains within the range of -30 to +120 degrees for the polyamide cage.
The bearing has a cylindrical bore of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 80 mm and a width of 18 mm. These standardised dimensions correspond to the standard design and facilitate dimensionally accurate replacement in existing machine designs with bearing seats to tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. The additional clearance between the balls and raceways is advantageous when tight fits cause the inner ring to expand or when temperature rises during operation need to be compensated for without impeding rotational movement.
The abbreviation TVH denotes a polyamide cage. Compared with metal versions, the plastic material dampens running noise and reduces the overall weight of the moving parts. It is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +120 degrees and guides the balls in both rows with minimal vibration.
As this roller bearing is manufactured without integrated seals, the bearing location must be protected by the surrounding housing structure. Users employ external sealing elements such as radial shaft seals for this purpose. The open design also allows for a free choice of lubricant, whether oil or grease.
The inner raceway of the outer ring forms a continuous hollow spherical surface. As a result, the inner ring and the two rows of balls can pivot freely out of the centre position within the outer ring. This operating principle automatically compensates for manufacturing-related misalignments in the bearing housings and dynamic shaft deflection during operation.
The inner ring, outer ring and rolling elements are made from standard roller bearing steel of grade 100Cr6. This material offers high strength within the specified temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. The integrated polyamide cage complements the steel components by providing smooth, low-friction guidance for both rows of balls.
