The double-row self-aligning ball bearing 2218 -K-TVH-C3 (90x160x40 mm) automatically compensates for misalignment and, thanks to its tapered bore, offers flexible mounting options.
The 2218 -K-TVH-C3 self-aligning ball bearing from FAG Rolling Bearings is a double-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) with a common hollow-spherical outer ring raceway. With key dimensions of a 90 mm bore, 160 mm outer diameter and 40 mm width, this open design is suitable for rotating shafts where misalignment or deflection occurs. Due to its design, the bearing automatically compensates for misalignment between the inner and outer rings during operation.
Design engineers primarily use this self-aligning ball bearing where elastic shaft deflection or misalignment between bearing housings needs to be compensated for. Typical applications include long shaft runs and industrial bearing arrangements with potential misalignment. The open design without sealing washers allows for direct lubrication via the housing. The integrated polyamide cage ensures smooth running of the two rows of balls within the permissible temperature range of –30 to +120 degrees Celsius.
The suffixes provide information about specific characteristics: the designation ‘K’ stands for a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12, which enables mounting on adapter sleeves or directly onto tapered shaft seats. The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This additional radial clearance prevents the bearing from becoming stressed after being pressed onto the shaft or due to operational heating, thereby supporting unimpeded rolling element movement.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 160 mm and a width of 40 mm. These standardised dimensions comply with tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1 and allow for a precise fit in standardised bearing housings.
An inner ring with a tapered bore at a ratio of 1:12 simplifies mounting on smooth or stepped shafts using suitable clamping or withdrawal sleeves. The desired radial clearance can be adjusted during installation by means of axial displacement, which facilitates removal during maintenance work.
The polyamide cage guides the two rows of balls with low friction and offers good damping properties. This ensures that the bearing runs quietly. The material can withstand continuous temperatures within the specified range of -30 to +120 degrees Celsius.
When the inner ring is pressed onto a tapered seat, the internal bearing clearance is reduced due to the elastic expansion of the ring. The C3 design ensures that sufficient residual clearance is maintained, so that the rolling elements do not jam even in the event of additional thermal expansion during operation.
As this model does not have integrated sealing washers, users must apply grease or lubricating oil externally via the surrounding housing. The open design allows the lubricant to circulate freely, but requires the user to provide a seal to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture.
