The FAG 2318 -K-M-C3 self-aligning ball bearing, measuring 90 × 190 × 64 mm, compensates for misalignment and accommodates high radial loads in a double-row configuration.
The 2318 -K-M-C3 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing from FAG designed for demanding industrial applications. It features a common hollow-spherical outer ring raceway, which allows the inner ring and ball set to adjust angularly. This design is suitable for shaft mountings where misalignment or elastic deflection occurs. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6 and featuring a solid brass cage, the component withstands high mechanical stresses within a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees.
This double-row self-aligning bearing is primarily used in long shaft designs that are prone to deflection under load. Thanks to the spherical raceway in the outer ring, the bearing automatically compensates for misalignment without causing harmful edge pressure. Typical applications include general mechanical engineering, conveyor systems and industrial drives. The open design allows for targeted lubrication with oil or grease via the machine housing.
The designation ‘K’ indicates a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12. The bearing is mounted directly onto tapered shaft seats or, using suitable adapter sleeves, onto cylindrical shafts. When slid onto the tapered seat, the radial bearing clearance is reduced. For this reason, this design features the increased bearing clearance class C3 to maintain the clearance required for operation after installation. The brass cage (suffix ‘M’) guides the rolling elements with low vibration and is suitable for increased thermal loads.
The roller bearing has a bore of 90 mm, an outer diameter of 190 mm and a width of 64 mm. The bore is of a tapered design with a taper ratio of 1:12. These dimensions determine the installation space required in the bearing housing.
The abbreviation K denotes a tapered or conical internal bore with a ratio of 1:12. This allows the bearing to be mounted either directly onto a tapered shaft journal or, using a slotted retaining sleeve, onto smooth cylindrical shafts. This method of mounting facilitates axial positioning and subsequent maintenance work.
The designation C3 indicates a larger radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. As the inner ring expands slightly when slid axially onto the tapered bearing seat, the internal bearing clearance is reduced during assembly. The C3 bearing clearance compensates for this fit expansion and prevents the balls from becoming stressed during operation.
The solid brass cage, designated by the letter M, is characterised by high strength and dimensional stability. It reliably separates and guides the rolling elements under sudden radial forces and rapid changes in rotational speed. Brass also withstands more aggressive lubricants and retains its shape throughout the entire temperature range up to +150 degrees.
As an open roller bearing, this design has no integrated seals and is not factory-filled with grease. You can flexibly supply the bearing with grease or lubricating oil via the surrounding housing. External sealing of the housing is essential to protect the bearing from dirt and moisture.
The bearing, made from standard 100Cr6 roller bearing steel, is designed for an operating temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. Within this range, the rings, rolling elements and brass cage retain their dimensional stability. The thermal stability of the externally supplied lubricant is crucial for safe operation at extreme temperatures.
