The FAG 2318 -M-C3 self-aligning ball bearing, measuring 90 x 190 x 64 mm, with a brass cage and increased C3 radial clearance, automatically compensates for operational shaft deflection.
The double-row 2318 -M-C3 self-aligning ball bearing from FAG Rolling Bearings automatically compensates for misalignment between the inner and outer rings via the common hollow-spherical outer ring raceway. Manufactured from standard rolling-bearing steel 100Cr6 to standard tolerance P0/PN (ABEC 1), this open rolling bearing is suitable for industrial applications with misalignment. With a bore of 90 mm, an outer diameter of 190 mm and a width of 64 mm, the bearing accommodates both radial and axial forces in both directions. The open design allows for direct lubrication within the housing across a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees.
Typical applications include mountings on long shafts or in separate pedestal housings, where static misalignment errors occur due to assembly or dynamic deflection under load. The two rows of balls run on a standard cylindrical inner ring and adapt smoothly to the hollow ball raceway of the outer ring. Thanks to the guided solid brass cage, the rolling element guidance retains its dimensional stability even under continuous vibrations or thermally demanding conditions. The standardised dimensions facilitate integration into existing designs.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This increased clearance between the balls and raceways counteracts jamming when temperature differences arise between the shaft and housing, or when tight fits cause the inner ring to expand radially. The designator ‘M’ stands for the solid brass cage, which guides the rolling elements precisely and withstands impact loads mechanically. As the design does not incorporate integrated lip seals, the machine housing is responsible for containing the lubricant.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 190 mm and a width of 64 mm. These standardised key dimensions facilitate the design of new constructions and ensure a precise fit when replacing components in existing machinery. The bearings are manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1 from tried-and-tested 100Cr6 roller bearing steel.
The C3 classification denotes a slightly increased radial bearing clearance prior to installation. This additional clearance compensates for radial constrictions caused by tight shaft fits or significant thermal expansion during operation. This design thus counteracts stress on the rolling elements at operating temperatures between -30 and +150 degrees and ensures the bearing runs smoothly.
The brass cage, designated by the letter M, is characterised by high mechanical strength and heat resistance. The solid cage retains its dimensional stability when subjected to vibrations, varying speeds and impact loads. This makes the design suitable for demanding operating environments with increased dynamic loads.
The outer ring features a continuous, hollow spherical raceway on which the two rows of balls in the inner ring can move freely. This allows the bearing unit to pivot in response to shaft deflection or misalignment of the housings. This angular compensation prevents damaging edge pressures on the rolling elements and reduces premature wear of the entire assembly.
As this bearing is designed without integrated sealing washers, grease or lubricating oil is supplied directly via the surrounding machine housing. For continuous operation, an external housing seal is required to prevent the loss of lubricant and the ingress of dirt particles. The open design also allows the lubricant to be flexibly adapted to the specific application.
The inner ring, the outer ring and the rolling elements are all made from case-hardened standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. This material offers high wear resistance and dimensional stability across the permissible temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. In the standard version, the inner ring has a cylindrical bore, which allows for direct mounting on the shaft.
