Self-Aligning Ball B. FAG 2316 -K-M-C3

The FAG 2316 -K-M-C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing (80x170x58 mm) compensates for misalignment and features a tapered bore and a solid brass cage.

This 2316 -K-M-C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing is based on a common hollow-spherical raceway in the outer ring. As a result, the component aligns itself automatically during operation and continuously compensates for misalignment, skewing and shaft deflection. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and featuring an open design without an abiding seal, it is suitable for a wide range of applications in the temperature range from -30 to +150 degrees, provided it is supplied with lubricating oil or roller bearing grease as required.

What is the 2316 -K-M-C3 self-aligning ball bearing suitable for in operation?

Shaft mountings with longer support spans or flexible housing structures benefit directly from the angularly adjustable design. The bearing primarily accommodates high radial loads whilst simultaneously tolerating axial forces in both directions, without causing localised edge pressures on the rolling elements. This reduces friction effects during dynamic deflection and promotes smooth mechanical operation in the event of angular misalignment of the rotating shaft.

What properties do the brass cage and tapered bore offer in the 2316 -K-M-C3?

The suffix ‘K’ denotes the tapered internal bore with a ratio of 1:12. This geometry enables precise mounting on tapered shaft seats or friction-fit mounting with clamping sleeves on cylindrical shafts. The fitted brass cage, designated by the letter M, guides the double-row arrangement of rolling elements stably within the raceways, even under severe oscillations and vibrations. Thanks to the factory-set increased radial bearing clearance (C3), sufficient radial bearing clearance remains after the inner ring has expanded radially during tightening, ensuring safe thermal compensation during operation.

What are the key features of the 2316 -K-M-C3 self-aligning ball bearing?

A shared hollow-spherical outer ring raceway enables this double-row bearing to automatically compensate for angular misalignment between the inner and outer rings. The version with a tapered inner bore, brass cage and increased clearance (C3) is suitable for mechanically demanding conditions.

What are the dimensions of the 2316 -K-M-C3 self-aligning ball bearing?

The main dimensions are 80 mm bore diameter, 170 mm outside diameter and 58 mm width. The bore is tapered at a ratio of 1:12, whilst the outer ring is cylindrical.

What does the suffix ‘K’ mean for this bearing?

The suffix ‘K’ denotes a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12. This design is intended for direct mounting on tapered shaft seats or for fixing to cylindrical shafts using suitable clamping sleeves.

Why is the C3 bearing clearance important during assembly?

C3 denotes a radial bearing clearance that is greater than that of the standard version. When the inner ring with a tapered bore is slid onto the shaft, this radial bearing clearance is measurably reduced due to mechanical expansion. The C3 bearing clearance helps to ensure that sufficient operating clearance remains after assembly.

What material is the roller bearing cage made of?

The letter M in the suffix denotes a solid brass cage. Brass is characterised by its dimensional stability and is particularly suitable for applications involving vibrations and demanding operating conditions.

How is the open pendulum ball bearing lubricated?

The open design, which does not require sealing washers, allows for a flexible choice of lubricant to suit the specific application. Depending on the operating environment and speed requirements, lubrication is provided using roller bearing grease or circulating lubricating oil via an external seal on the housing.
