The FAG 2220 -K-M-C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing with a 100 mm tapered bore reliably compensates for angular misalignment in demanding shaft mountings.
The FAG 2220 -K-M-C3 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6). Thanks to the hollow-spherical outer ring raceway, the bearing self-aligns during operation and compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection. This version features a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12 and a brass cage. With main dimensions of 100 mm bore diameter, 180 mm outer diameter and 46 mm width, this open bearing is suitable for applications in the temperature range from -30 to +150 degrees Celsius.
This bearing is primarily used where misalignment occurs between the shaft and the housing, or where shafts deflect elastically under load. The double-row rolling element arrangement primarily absorbs radial forces and low axial forces in both directions. As the manufacturer, FAG, incorporates a solid brass cage here, the ball guidance remains dimensionally stable even under high accelerations, vibrations or thermal stress. Typical applications are therefore found in general mechanical engineering and in industrial drive trains.
The suffix ‘K’ denotes the tapered bore, which allows for mounting directly onto a tapered shaft seat or, using a clamping or withdrawal sleeve, onto cylindrical shafts. When the inner ring is pushed onto the shaft, the bearing clearance is measurably reduced, enabling precise adjustment of the operating fit. The slightly increased radial bearing clearance (C3) prevents the bearing from running under stress after installation or as a result of operational heating. As this is an open bearing without an integrated seal, you can precisely match the lubricant and external seals to your environmental conditions.
The dimensions are 100 mm bore diameter, 180 mm outer diameter and 46 mm width, with a tapered bore at a ratio of 1:12. Manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN, the bearing can be fitted with a precise fit onto the corresponding shaft journals or sleeves.
The designation comprises three technical characteristics: The ‘K’ stands for the tapered bore with a 1:12 taper. The ‘M’ refers to the guided solid brass cage, which offers high stability. The ‘C3’ indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version, to compensate for thermal expansion during operation.
When mounted on a tapered bearing seat or a shrink sleeve, the inner ring expands as it is pushed on axially. This reduces the bearing clearance inside the bearing. The factory-set increased bearing clearance (C3) provides the necessary leeway to ensure that sufficient residual radial clearance remains after press-fitting and during thermal expansion in operation.
As an open bearing, this version does not come with integrated sealing washers as standard. You can tailor the lubrication – using oil or grease – and the external housing seals to suit the operating speed and environmental conditions. The component can be used within an operating temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees Celsius with suitable industrial lubricants.
A single, continuous hollow ball raceway is machined into the outer ring of the bearing. The two rows of balls in the inner ring can move centrically within this raceway. This design enables the bearing to compensate for angular misalignment between the housing and the shaft, as well as dynamic shaft deflection during operation, without reducing service life due to edge pressure.
The brass cage offers high mechanical strength and good thermal conductivity. Under varying speeds, vibrations or higher thermal loads of up to +150 degrees Celsius, it guides the rolling elements precisely along the raceways. This ensures stable guidance of the balls under demanding industrial operating conditions.
