The SKF 2218 self-aligning ball bearing flexibly compensates for misalignment with its two rows of balls, featuring a 90 mm bore and an outer diameter of 160 mm.
The 2218 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing to tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1) with a cylindrical bore. Thanks to the shared spherical raceway in the outer ring, the rolling elements can swivel freely in response to shaft deflection. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), this SKF design is suitable for demanding industrial drives. The open design allows direct lubricant access via an external lubrication system within the housing.
This rolling bearing is primarily used where misalignment between the shaft and housing or operational deflection occurs. Thanks to its double-row ball arrangement, the bearing accommodates radial forces as well as moderate axial forces on both sides. As housing misalignment is dynamically compensated for during operation, the risk of edge stresses at the contact surfaces is reduced.
As an open bearing without integrated sealing washers, the 2218 self-aligning ball bearing is designed for use in lubricated bearing housings. Grease or lubricating oil can be selected to suit the specific operating requirements. The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements within a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees Celsius. The standard radial bearing clearance ensures the intended operating clearance is maintained after assembly, provided standard fits are used.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 90 mm, an outer diameter of 160 mm and a width of 40 mm. The inner ring is cylindrical in the standard version.
The outer ring features a continuous, hollow-spherical raceway for both rows of balls. In the event of shaft deflection or misalignment between the bearing positions, the balls, together with the inner ring, pivot freely within the hollow sphere. This design counteracts edge stresses during operation.
The bearing rings and rolling elements are made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6). This material is characterised by high hardness and wear resistance. A sheet steel cage is fitted to guide the rolling elements; it is designed for operating temperatures between –30 and +150 degrees Celsius.
As an open-type bearing, this bearing has no integrated seals. Before initial commissioning, it must be properly lubricated with a suitable lubricating oil or grease. In addition, the bearing housing should be protected against dirt and moisture using suitable external seals.
This model features the standard radial bearing clearance. This ensures that the necessary operating clearance is maintained following assembly using conventional fits on the shaft and housing. The bearing is therefore suitable for standard thermal and mechanical operating conditions.
The component is manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. This designation complies with the industrial standard for dimensional and running accuracy. It meets the requirements of common mechanical engineering applications and facilitates smooth replacement during maintenance work.
