The SKF 2217 K double-row self-aligning ball bearing compensates for misalignment thanks to its hollow-spherical outer ring raceway and features a tapered bore.
The SKF 2217 K self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing with the following main dimensions: 85 mm bore, 150 mm outside diameter and 36 mm width. Thanks to the common spherical raceway in the outer ring, the bearing adjusts to angular misalignment during operation. This allows designs with longer shafts or deflections to accommodate misalignments with low friction. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and fitted with a sheet steel cage, this open bearing is designed for industrial drives.
The 2217 K self-aligning ball bearing is primarily used where elastic shaft deflection or misalignment between bearing seats occurs as a result of operation. Typical applications include bearing arrangements with long shaft spans or housing misalignment. The double-row ball arrangement primarily accommodates radial loads, but also withstands moderate axial forces in both directions. As the bearing is of an open design, it is lubricated directly via an oil or grease supply from the equipment.
The suffix ‘K’ denotes the tapered inner ring bore with a taper ratio of 1:12. This design facilitates mounting on cylindrical shafts using a clamping or withdrawal sleeve, as well as directly onto tapered shaft seats. Fitters use the axial displacement to set the fixed bearing fit and the desired residual bearing clearance for the standard radial bearing clearance. As no sealing washers are integrated, the rolling bearing covers an operating temperature range of –30 to +150 degrees Celsius, provided the lubricant is suitable for this purpose.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 85 mm, an external diameter of 150 mm and a width of 36 mm. The inner bore is tapered at a ratio of 1:12. It complies with the standard tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1 and is suitable for standardised bearing seats in mechanical engineering.
The letter K denotes a tapered bore in the inner ring. Unlike a cylindrical bore, the bearing is usually mounted on a smooth shaft using an adapter sleeve or pressed directly onto a tapered journal. This simplifies both installation and subsequent maintenance work.
Two rows of balls run on a shared, spherical raceway on the outer ring. This allows the entire inner ring assembly, including the cage and balls, to tilt within the outer ring. The bearing automatically compensates for static misalignment and dynamic shaft deflection, thereby helping to prevent edge loading on the raceways.
Open roller bearings do not have factory-fitted sealing washers and are suitable for housing designs with their own lubrication system. Grease or lubricating oil can reach the balls and the sheet steel cage unhindered. At the same time, the open design allows for use within an extended temperature range of between –30 and +150 degrees Celsius.
This model has the standard radial bearing clearance. When the inner ring is slid onto a tapered seat, this radial clearance is reduced as the inner ring expands. Therefore, during assembly, the axial travel or the remaining bearing clearance must be carefully checked to prevent jamming during operation.
Inside, a sheet steel cage guides the two sets of balls evenly into the guide grooves of the inner ring. Sheet steel cages offer solid mechanical stability whilst being lightweight. They are resistant to most industrial lubricants and operate reliably within the permissible temperature range of 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel.
