Self-Aligning Ball B. FAG 2308 -K-TVH-C3

The FAG 2308 -K-TVH-C3 self-aligning ball bearing, with a 40 mm tapered bore and C3 clearance, compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation.

The FAG 2308 -K-TVH-C3 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing with a hollow-spherical outer ring raceway for industrial applications. Thanks to this design, the bearing automatically compensates for shaft misalignment or alignment errors. With dimensions of 40 mm bore diameter, 90 mm outer diameter and 33 mm width, the component is made from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel. An integrated polyamide cage guides the rolling elements with low vibration and covers a temperature range from –30 to +120 degrees.

When is the 2308 -K-TVH-C3 self-aligning ball bearing used?

This double-row self-aligning ball bearing is used when shaft deflection or misalignment occurs between housing bores. Such angular deviations tend to occur particularly in long shaft guides or flexible frame constructions. As the open design features no integrated grinding or cover discs, it is primarily installed in protected environments or in housings with external seals. The geometry accommodates angular misalignment without causing damaging edge pressure on the raceways.

What do the designations K, TVH and C3 mean for your design?

The suffix ‘K’ denotes a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12, which allows for mounting on clamping or withdrawal sleeves. The designation ‘TVH’ stands for a flexible cage made of polyamide. The designation C3 indicates an increased radial bearing clearance. This additional clearance prevents the rolling elements from jamming if interference fits on the shaft cause the inner ring to expand, or if operational temperature differences arise between the inner and outer rings.

What are the dimensions of the 2308 -K-TVH-C3 self-aligning ball bearing?

This roller bearing has a bore of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 90 mm and a width of 33 mm. The bore is tapered with a taper ratio of 1:12. The tolerances comply with the standard tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1 for general mechanical engineering.

What is the advantage of the tapered bore marked ‘K’?

The inner ring with a tapered bore (1:12) allows it to be fitted onto smooth or stepped shafts using a clamping sleeve or pull-off sleeve. This method of installation simplifies fitting and removal. Furthermore, the remaining operating clearance can be adjusted via the axial displacement during press-fitting.

Why does this self-aligning ball bearing have a clearance of C3?

C3 means that the radial bearing clearance is greater than that of standard bearings. When fitted onto a tapered seat, the inner ring expands, thereby reducing the bearing clearance. The C3 design helps to ensure that, after assembly and when the bearing is warmed up during operation, there remains sufficient clearance for smooth running.

What operating temperatures is the TVH cage suitable for?

The TVH cage is made of polyamide and is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +120 degrees. The material is characterised by its low weight and damping properties. For continuous applications above 120 degrees, bearings with metal cages are recommended.

How is the 2308 open pendulum ball bearing lubricated?

As an open roller bearing without integrated seals, this model requires a lubricant supply via the surrounding housing, using either grease or oil. A housing seal retains the lubricant within the system and protects the raceways from the ingress of particles or moisture.

How does a self-aligning ball bearing compensate for misalignment?

The hollow spherical raceway of the outer ring shares a common centre with the bearing assembly as a whole. This allows the unit, comprising the inner ring, the cage and the two rows of balls in the outer ring, to adjust freely. The system compensates for misalignments caused by installation inaccuracies or deflection during operation without placing increased stress on the edges.
