The SKF 2314/C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing, measuring 70x150x51 mm, compensates for misalignment and offers increased C3 clearance.
The 2314/C3 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing with a common spherical raceway in the outer ring. This design automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. SKF manufactures this model from standard 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel to tolerance class P0/PN (equivalent to ABEC 1). A sturdy sheet steel cage guides the two rows of balls at a uniform distance. As an open rolling bearing without seals, the component is directly integrated into an external housing lubrication system.
The two rows of balls roll on the spherical outer ring raceway, allowing the inner ring to pivot with low friction in the event of slight shaft misalignment. This ensures that the force distribution within the rolling contact remains uniform even in the event of misalignment.
This design is used when operational deflections of elastic shafts or misalignments between two separate bearing locations occur. Thanks to the spherical raceway in the outer ring, the inner ring and rolling element set continuously adjust to angular misalignments without harmful stress peaks occurring at the edges. The double-row bearing is primarily designed for radial loads and accommodates moderate axial forces in both directions, thereby mechanically relieving the system in the event of misalignment.
The suffix /C3 denotes an increased radial clearance compared with the standard CN bearing clearance. This design clearance serves to prevent the rolling elements from jamming when thermal differences occur between the rotating inner ring and the housing. If the 70 mm shaft expands thermally during operation, sufficient residual clearance is maintained despite the interference fit and heating, which contributes to smooth and low-friction concentricity.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 70 mm, an outer diameter of 150 mm and a width of 51 mm. These standardised key dimensions enable the precise design of bearing arrangements and the direct replacement of existing components during maintenance.
As an open-type bearing, this component is designed without integrated seals. This allows grease or lubricating oil to flow in unhindered from the housing environment. It is preferably used where external seals on the bearing housing provide protection against contamination and moisture.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees Celsius. Both the dimensionally stable 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their mechanical properties within this temperature range. The actual usable range depends on the lubricant used.
The outer ring has a continuous, hollow-spherical inner raceway. The inner ring, cage and ball sets can pivot with low friction on this concave raceway. Angular misalignments caused by misalignment or elastic shaft deflection under load are thereby automatically compensated for during operation.
The bearing is manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN, which corresponds to ABEC 1. This represents the standardised normal accuracy in mechanical engineering. The bore diameter, outer diameter and ring widths comply with the standardised limit dimensions for cylindrical bearing seats.
Unlike single-row deep-groove ball bearings, self-aligning ball bearings have two rows of balls and a spherical outer ring. Whilst rigid deep-groove ball bearings can bear the load on their edges when misaligned and may wear out prematurely, the self-aligning ball bearing automatically compensates for misalignment.
