The FAG 2316-M self-aligning ball bearing, measuring 80 × 170 × 58 mm and featuring a brass cage, automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation.
The FAG 2316-M self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) for mounting positions with misalignment. With a bore of 80 mm, an outer diameter of 170 mm and a width of 58 mm, the common hollow-spherical outer ring raceway automatically compensates for misalignment between the inner and outer rings. This version has standard radial clearance and a tolerance class of P0/PN (ABEC 1), and is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees.
The double-row bearing is used when operational shaft deflections or misalignments between bearing positions need to be compensated for. By allowing the balls to move freely on the spherical outer raceway, the component prevents damaging edge pressures and keeps rolling resistance low. The standard cylindrical bore allows for direct mounting on the shaft. The open design also allows for the precise adjustment of the lubricant within the surrounding housing.
The suffix ‘-M’ indicates the solid brass cage, which guides the rolling elements at high speeds or under vibration. Brass is a material characterised by high strength and thermal stability within the specified temperature range. As the bearing is of open construction, protection against foreign particles is provided by external housing seals. The targeted supply of lubricant, whether oil or grease, supports the low-friction operation of the components.
The dimensions are 80 mm internal diameter (bore), 170 mm external diameter and 58 mm overall width. The inner ring is manufactured with a cylindrical bore as standard. These dimensions correspond to the specified size series for double-row self-aligning ball bearings and determine the required installation space in the housing and on the shaft.
The hollow spherical raceway of the outer ring serves both rows of balls. This allows the inner ring, together with the ball cages, to pivot about the centre of the bearing. The component thereby automatically compensates for static misalignments resulting from housing machining, as well as elastic shaft deflection during operation, without any additional edge pressures.
The letter M denotes a solid brass cage. Brass cages offer high mechanical stability and reliably guide the rolling elements at the specified pitch, even in the presence of vibrations or varying loads.
The bearing has no integrated seals. Protection against particles and moisture is provided by the surrounding housing, fitted with suitable external seals. The open design allows grease or lubricating oil to be applied in accordance with the precise specifications of the respective design.
The 2316-M self-aligning ball bearing is specified for operating temperatures between -30 and +150 degrees. Both the 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel and the brass cage are designed for this temperature range. When determining the operating temperature, it is important to ensure that the selected lubricant is approved for this range.
P0 or PN is the standardised tolerance class for rolling bearings in accordance with ISO specifications, comparable to ABEC 1. It specifies the permissible dimensional, form and running deviations for the bore, outer diameter and radial run-out, and meets the usual accuracy requirements in mechanical engineering.
