The SKF 1204 EKTN9/C3 self-aligning ball bearing, with a tapered bore and C3 clearance, compensates for misalignment with a shaft diameter of 20 mm.
The SKF 1204 EKTN9/C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing absorbs radial forces and automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. Thanks to the shared hollow-spherical outer ring raceway, the two rows of balls pivot along with the shaft without increased friction. With dimensions of a 20 mm bore, 47 mm outer diameter and 14 mm width, this design is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. The open bearing, made from standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6, can be flexibly lubricated via the selected housing lubrication system.
This rolling bearing is suitable for designs in which shafts deflect elastically or misalignment occurs between bearing seats. Typical applications include bearing arrangements with long shafts or separated housing positions where misalignment needs to be compensated for.
Because the outer ring is spherical in shape, the inner ring and rolling elements move with angular tolerance. This prevents edge stresses and protects surrounding components from premature wear. In combination with suitable housings, the bearing arrangement smoothly absorbs operational misalignments.
The tapered bore with a 1:12 taper allows for simple mounting on smooth shafts using a shrink sleeve or directly onto tapered shaft seats. During press-fitting, the inner ring expands, thereby reducing the bearing clearance.
The slightly increased radial bearing clearance (C3) specifically compensates for this reduction in bearing clearance. It also compensates for operational temperature differences between the inner and outer rings in the range from -30 to +120 degrees. The polyamide cage ensures quiet operation.
With a bore of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 47 mm and a total width of 14 mm, this design complies with standard dimensions. Thanks to the tapered design of the 20 mm bore with a taper ratio of 1:12, the double-row self-aligning bearing can be mounted on tapered shaft seats or using standardised adapter sleeves.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This increased clearance is advantageous when mounting on shrink sleeves, as sliding the bearing onto the taper reduces the radial clearance. Furthermore, the C3 clearance prevents the rolling elements from becoming jammed due to thermal expansion during operation.
The tapered bore with a 1:12 taper facilitates the fitting and removal of the inner ring onto the shaft. It allows the use of standard clamping or withdrawal sleeves on cylindrical shafts without a shoulder. The tightness of the fit can be precisely determined by the axial displacement.
The polyamide cage is characterised by its low weight and good damping properties. It guides the rows of balls with low friction and quietly at operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +120 degrees. Suitable lubrication via the housing is required for operation.
As an open bearing, this design has no integrated sealing washers. This allows the lubricant – grease or oil – to reach the raceways unhindered, and dirt particles can be flushed out between lubrication intervals. In this design, protection against dust and moisture is provided externally by the surrounding bearing housing.
The spherical inner surface of the outer ring forms a common raceway for both rows of balls. In the event of shaft deflection or misalignment, the assembly comprising the inner ring, cage and balls pivots along with the outer ring. This ensures that any forces acting on the bearing are distributed evenly, without causing damaging edge pressures.
