The FAG 1316 -K-M-C3 self-aligning ball bearing, with an 80 mm tapered bore and a double-row design, compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation.
The FAG 1316 -K-M-C3 self-aligning ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) with a hollow-spherical outer ring raceway. This design automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. The component has an outer diameter of 170 mm and a width of 39 mm, and complies with tolerance class P0 (normal tolerance). Thanks to its open design, the lubricant can be freely selected and tailored to the specific operating environment.
Designs with long shafts or separate bearing housings use this self-aligning ball bearing to compensate for angular misalignment of the shafts without increased edge pressure. The double-row ball arrangement primarily absorbs radial forces and also supports axial forces in both directions. Due to the open design without sealing washers, external sealing of the housing is required, which allows for individual lubrication with grease or oil.
The solid brass cage guides the rolling elements with minimal vibration and, together with the roller bearing steel, is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees. The increased radial bearing clearance (C3) counteracts seizing if the shaft and bearing rings heat up to different degrees during operation. Furthermore, the radial clearance is reduced when the inner ring is pressed on: the tapered bore with a pitch ratio of 1:12 enables precise mounting on clamping or withdrawal sleeves as well as on tapered shaft seats.
This double-row bearing has a tapered bore with a nominal diameter of 80 mm, an outside diameter of 170 mm and a width across flats of 39 mm. The bore taper has a standard pitch ratio of 1:12, which allows it to be mounted using suitable shaft seats or adapter sleeves.
The combination of letters describes key design features: the letter K stands for the tapered bore with a 1:12 taper. The M denotes a sturdy brass cage, whilst C3 indicates an increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version.
An increased radial bearing clearance (C3) compensates for dimensional changes caused by thermal expansion of the components. Furthermore, the bearing clearance is reduced when the inner ring is pressed onto a tapered shaft seat or a clamping sleeve, ensuring that the correct operating clearance remains after assembly.
As this component is supplied without integrated sealing washers, users must apply grease or lubricating oil externally. The open design allows for direct flushing and flexible relubrication, but requires the housing to be sealed on site to protect against dirt and moisture.
A temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees is permissible for operation. The 100Cr6 roller bearing steel used and the durable brass cage retain their dimensional stability within these limits, provided that the lubricant and external seal are designed for this temperature range.
The shared hollow spherical raceway in the outer ring allows the inner ring, together with the ball cages, to adjust freely about the centre of the bearing. As a result, the component continuously compensates for angular misalignment between the shaft and the housing without causing excessive edge pressures on the rolling elements.
