The SKF 31317 single-row tapered roller bearing (85 × 180 × 44.5 mm) accommodates high radial and unilateral axial loads in industrial bearing arrangements.
The SKF 31317 tapered roller bearing is a separable roller bearing in the Explorer performance class, designed for demanding industrial applications. With a bore of 85 mm, an outside diameter of 180 mm and a width of 44.5 mm, this single-row bearing accommodates both radial loads and unidirectional axial forces. Thanks to the separate mounting of the inner ring with roller set and the outer ring, the bearing facilitates installation in gearboxes or machine housings. The design complies with the standard tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1.
The 31317 tapered roller bearing is used where combined loads occur on rotating shafts. Typical applications can be found in general mechanical engineering and in gearbox designs. As a single tapered roller bearing, by its very design, can only support axial forces in one direction, it is usually fitted in pairs in an X or O arrangement with a second mating bearing. This arrangement allows the required operating clearance to be set.
The integrated sheet steel cage guides the tapered rollers and is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +120 °C. With this open bearing design, users can specifically tailor the lubricant and external sealing to the operating environment. The SKF Explorer design features an optimised internal geometry, which aids the formation of a lubricating film. The tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1 also enables a precise replacement fit during maintenance.
With an internal diameter of 85 mm, an external diameter of 180 mm and a width of 44.5 mm, the bearing complies with standard metric dimensions. These dimensions allow for a precise fit when installed in housings and shaft mounts in mechanical engineering.
Single-row tapered roller bearings can simultaneously accommodate high radial forces as well as axial forces from a single direction. Due to the contact angle between the raceway and the tapered rollers, part of the radial load is converted into an axial force. For alternating axial loads, engineers therefore usually fit a second bearing mounted in a mirror-image configuration.
The permissible operating temperature range is between -30 and +120 °C. This range is determined by the dimensional stability of the components and the sheet steel cage. During commissioning, care must be taken to ensure that the selected lubricant is also approved for these thermal conditions.
The tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1 defines the standard accuracy for dimensional, form and running tolerances in rolling bearings. It meets the typical requirements of industrial gearboxes and drives and ensures that the bearing is compatible with standardised shaft and housing fits.
The bearing can be dismantled: the outer ring can be fitted separately from the inner ring and the roller cage. As single-row designs do not have a fixed bearing clearance as standard, users adjust the required bearing clearance or preload axially via the mating bearing only during installation.
The bearing is designed as an open tapered roller bearing and therefore has no integrated thrust washers or cover plates. Users must ensure a supply of lubricant – either oil or rolling-bearing grease – and protect the bearing housing from dirt and moisture using external seals fitted to the machine housing.
