The SKF 6217 /C4 deep groove ball bearing, measuring 85x150x28 mm and featuring significantly increased radial clearance, ensures reliable operation at high operating temperatures.
This single-row deep groove ball bearing 6217 /C4 from SKF is designed primarily to withstand radial loads as well as moderate axial forces in both directions. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, this bearing is characterised by its dimensional stability and load-carrying capacity. As this is an open bearing without integrated sealing washers, the lubricant circulates freely between the raceways and the robust sheet steel cage. This design provides a suitable basis for demanding thermal environments.
Typical applications for this rolling bearing include general mechanical engineering and thermally demanding industrial drives. The open design allows for direct integration into centralised oil circulation lubrication systems or housings with defined grease lubrication. Thanks to its precise manufacture to tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1), the deep groove ball bearing is suitable for shaft designs with uniform radial guidance. Design engineers and maintenance personnel specifically opt for this variant when designs require an unobstructed supply of lubricant and a clean, sealed bearing housing provides external protection.
The internal radial clearance C4 is significantly greater than the standard value for normal bearings and also exceeds class C3. This increased radial clearance counteracts stress in the bearing caused by significant temperature differences between the inner and outer rings. If, during operation, the shaft heats up and expands more than the surrounding housing, the radial clearance compensates for this difference. Furthermore, bearing clearance class C4 compensates for the reduction in bearing clearance that occurs with tight press fits on the 85 mm shaft or in the 150 mm housing bore.
This roller bearing has an inside diameter of 85 mm, an outside diameter of 150 mm and a width of 28 mm. The cylindrical outer ring has neither a flange nor a ring groove. This makes the bearing suitable for standardised housing bores and shaft seats.
The suffix C4 indicates a significantly increased radial clearance. The radial clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways is greater than with standard bearing clearance and than in the C3 group. This ensures that there is sufficient clearance for smooth running, even under conditions of intense operational heating or tight fits.
The component is designed for an operating temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees Celsius. The dimensional stability of the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel used and the sheet steel cage allow it to be used in industrial applications subject to thermal stress. This requires a lubricant that is approved for the relevant operating temperature.
The bearing has no integrated seals. Lubrication is therefore carried out on site, depending on the application. You can choose to lubricate it with grease or via an oil circuit. It is important to ensure effective external sealing of the housing so that neither contaminants nor moisture can reach the exposed rolling elements.
A robust sheet steel cage is fitted. This type of cage keeps the balls spaced apart with minimal friction and withstands typical vibrations and shock loads. It is also resistant to most synthetic and mineral lubricants within the permissible temperature range.
This bearing type is manufactured to tolerance class P0 or PN, which corresponds to the ABEC 1 standard. This standard tolerance is sufficient for the vast majority of industrial machinery applications and allows for straightforward installation on standard-ground shafts and in precision-machined housings.
