The SKF 61820 deep-groove ball bearing is an open, thin-section bearing measuring 100 × 125 × 13 mm, designed for industrial applications where space is at a premium.
The 61820 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing from SKF, specifically designed for applications with limited radial installation space. With an inside diameter of 100 mm, an outside diameter of 125 mm and a narrow width of 13 mm, this design offers a very slim profile. The open bearing is made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) and is suitable for withstanding predominantly radial loads as well as light axial loads in both directions.
The deep groove ball bearing 61820 is primarily used where there is limited radial installation space available for large shaft diameters. Typical applications can be found in general mechanical engineering in bearing arrangements with a low cross-sectional height. Thanks to the integrated sheet steel cage and the defined temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees, the design is suitable for constant speeds in protected installation environments with external housing seals or a central lubrication supply.
As an open bearing, this design has no integrated sealing washers, which means that lubricants such as oil or grease can reach the rolling elements unhindered. Designers should therefore ensure that the bearing housing is externally sealed to prevent the ingress of contaminants. The bearings are manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1) with standard radial clearance. At typical operating temperatures and with standard fits, this combination provides a balanced clearance between the rolling elements and raceways, ensuring smooth running.
With an internal bore of 100 mm, an external diameter of 125 mm and a total width of 13 mm, this design is classified as a thin-section bearing. This small cross-section allows for space-saving installation in compact housing designs, even with large shaft dimensions.
The permissible operating temperature range is from -20 to +120 degrees Celsius. This range is determined by the standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and the guided sheet steel cage. When selecting a lubricant, users should ensure that the grease or oil used covers this temperature range.
This bearing clearance, which is not marked with a ‘C’ suffix, describes the radial clearance between the outer ring, inner ring and balls when the bearing is unmounted. It ensures that the bearing rotates freely after being pressed onto the shaft and that no seizing occurs when it heats up during normal operation.
Open roller bearings do not have integrated seals or cover plates, which minimises internal friction and facilitates access for external lubricants. They are suitable for enclosed assemblies where external housing seals provide protection against particles and where oil-bath or recirculating lubrication is used.
Acting as a guide, the sheet steel cage keeps the rolling elements at a uniform distance from one another and prevents the balls from coming into direct contact with one another. Thanks to the low weight of the sheet metal, additional friction is kept to a minimum, whilst the cage withstands the mechanical forces within the permissible temperature range.
The P0 and PN classifications correspond to international tolerance class ABEC 1. This is the industrial standard for dimensional, geometric and running accuracy, designed to meet the requirements of the majority of standard industrial drive and mechanical engineering applications.
