The SKF 6003/C3 single-row deep groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 17x35x10 mm, offers compact dimensions and increased bearing clearance for shaft mountings subject to thermal loads.
The SKF 6003/C3 deep groove ball bearing is an open, single-row radial ball bearing made from standard rolling bearing steel (100Cr6). Designed for radial loads and moderate axial forces in both directions, the bearing does not require integrated grinding or cover plates. The Explorer version combines dimensional accuracy to P6 with improved running accuracy to P5. As a result, the bearing ensures smooth running in demanding assemblies within a permissible temperature range of –20 to +150 °C.
This rolling bearing is primarily used in shaft mountings where thermal influences or installation conditions cause the shaft and inner ring to expand. As this is an open bearing, lubricating oil or grease from the surrounding system reaches the rolling elements and raceways directly. The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly and is suitable for medium to high speeds in externally protected housings.
The C3 designation indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. When the shaft and inner ring heat up during operation, the steel expands; the additional radial clearance compensates for this thermal expansion and reduces the risk of internal stresses. At the same time, the P6 dimensional accuracy and P5 running accuracy ensure precise concentricity within the bearing seat. An external housing seal protects the open bearing from the ingress of dirt.
With an internal diameter of 17 mm, an external diameter of 35 mm and a width of 10 mm, the bearing fits into compact installation spaces. The outer ring is cylindrical, without a flange or groove, so that the component sits flush with cylindrical housing bores.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This internal clearance between the balls and raceways helps to compensate for stresses when temperature differences occur between the inner and outer rings, or when tight fits reduce the radial clearance.
Without sealing or cover plates, external lubricants can circulate unhindered within the unit, reaching the rolling elements and raceways. Furthermore, the absence of contacting sealing lips reduces frictional resistance. External sealing via the surrounding housing is required to prevent the ingress of dirt and foreign particles.
The combination of P6 dimensional accuracy and P5 running accuracy offers tighter tolerance limits than the standard ‘Normal’ version. This ensures precise shaft concentricity and reduces vibrations when high standards of guidance accuracy are required.
The rings and rolling elements are made of standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), whilst a sheet steel cage guides the balls. This choice of materials is designed for a temperature range of -20 to +150 °C and maintains reliable dimensional stability even under fluctuating thermal loads.
In the absence of a factory-fitted lubricant charge, lubrication is provided via the surrounding housing system, for example by means of an oil bath, oil circulation or initial greasing during assembly. The choice of lubricant depends on the operating temperature, which ranges from -20 to +150 °C, and the speeds of the respective shafts.
