The SKF 6014/C4 deep-groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 70x110x20 mm and a C4 clearance, offers reliable operation even under high temperatures.
The 6014/C4 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing made from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element steel, designed to withstand radial loads as well as axial forces in both directions. The SKF Explorer quality version combines standardised dimensions with high material purity of the steel. Thanks to its open design without integrated seals, this bearing is suitable for applications where lubrication is provided by the customer using lubricating oil or grease within a sealed housing.
Design engineers primarily select this version for shaft bearings where significant temperature differences occur between the inner ring and the outer ring during operation. Typical applications include bearing arrangements where heat is generated by the rotating shaft. The ball bearing primarily absorbs radial forces and guides the shaft axially in both directions. The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly across the entire permissible temperature range from –20 to +150 degrees Celsius.
The suffix C4 indicates a significantly increased radial clearance, which exceeds both the standard clearance class and the C3 grade. If tight fits on the 70 mm shaft or operational thermal expansion restrict the operating clearance, this design margin helps to prevent the rolling elements from becoming stressed. Furthermore, manufacture to tolerance class P6 or ABEC 3 results in reduced runout and dimensional deviation compared with the standard tolerance class, ensuring precise shaft guidance.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 70 mm, an external diameter of 110 mm and a width of 20 mm. The cylindrical outer ring has neither a flange nor a snap ring groove, which allows the component to fit flush into cylindrical housing bores.
The C4 radial clearance offers greater leeway prior to installation than the standard class or C3. This compensates for dimensional changes when the inner ring is stretched by a tight press fit or becomes very hot during operation. In this way, the required mobility of the balls is maintained during operation.
As this roller bearing is manufactured without its own sealing washers, the lubricant must be supplied via the housing design. The component can be operated using grease as well as in oil bath or oil circulation systems. External seals on the housing cover protect the interior from the ingress of particles.
Classification to tolerance class P6 (equivalent to ABEC 3) specifies tighter manufacturing tolerances in terms of dimensional accuracy and concentricity compared with the standard tolerance. This ensures smooth running and precise shaft guidance at higher speeds.
The bearing is designed for an operating temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees Celsius. The inner and outer rings, which are made from roller bearing steel, together with the sheet steel cage, maintain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. When selecting the operating lubricant, care must be taken to ensure that it is approved for the same temperature limits.
Both the raceways and the rolling elements are made from through-hardened standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. This material is characterised by high wear resistance and fatigue resistance under rolling loads. The guided sheet-metal cage is made of sheet steel and ensures uniform ball spacing.
