The SKF 6318 deep groove ball bearing is an open, single-row rolling bearing measuring 90 × 190 × 43 mm, designed for high loads in industrial applications.
As a single-row rolling bearing, the SKF 6318 deep groove ball bearing can accommodate high radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions. Manufactured from 100Cr6 bearing steel in the SKF Explorer performance class, this component is designed for demanding applications. With a bore of 90 mm, an outer diameter of 190 mm and a width of 43 mm, this design is suitable for shaft support in medium to heavy-duty machinery systems.
This bearing is primarily used in designs subject to combined radial and axial loads, such as in industrial gearboxes or machine drives. The deep raceway geometry absorbs the forces encountered in a stable manner. Thanks to the open design without sealing washers, lubricating oil or grease circulates directly within the rolling element chamber. This facilitates operation in enclosed housings with external lubrication. The permissible temperature range is from –20 to +120 degrees.
The open design of the bearing allows for a free choice of lubricant to suit the specific application. A dimensionally stable sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly along the raceway and withstands mechanical stresses. Thanks to manufacture to standard tolerance P0 or ABEC 1 and standard radial bearing clearance, the component fits precisely into suitable bearing seats. As the bearing is supplied ex-works without sealing washers, care must be taken during design to ensure that the housing is effectively sealed against the ingress of contaminants.
With an internal diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 190 mm and a width of 43 mm, the 6318 deep-groove ball bearing complies with the standardised metric size series for single-row bearings. These standardised dimensions enable designers to precisely dimension shaft seats and housing bores in heavy machinery and plant engineering.
SKF Explorer bearings feature optimised internal geometries and refined raceway surfaces. The 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel used is of high purity. This reduces internal stresses in the contact area between the rolling elements and the raceway, which contributes to even load distribution and helps to extend service life under demanding conditions.
The open design has neither cover plates nor sealing plates. This design is particularly suitable for installation environments with centralised oil or grease lubrication, such as in industrial gearboxes. The lubricant can flow freely into the rolling element chamber and dissipate heat. A prerequisite for use is a housing that protects the bearing location from dirt and moisture.
The standard radial bearing clearance, often referred to as CN, describes the theoretical radial clearance between the outer ring, the balls and the inner ring when the bearing is in its unassembled state. This standard clearance is entirely sufficient for conventional fits on shafts and housings, as well as for normal operating temperatures. It prevents excessive stress on the rolling elements, provided there are no significant temperature differences between the inner and outer rings.
The permissible temperature range is between -20 and +120 degrees. This thermal range is determined by the material resistance of the standard roller bearing steel and the sheet steel cage. During commissioning, users must ensure that the selected lubricant retains its lubricating properties within this temperature range and maintains a stable lubricating film.
A dimensionally stable sheet steel cage is fitted inside the bearing. This type of cage is characterised by its low weight combined with high strength. It guides the ball row precisely along the raceway and takes up very little space inside the bearing. This leaves sufficient space for the circulation of grease or lubricating oil between the components.
