The 32322 tapered roller bearing from FAG Wälzlager accommodates high radial and axial loads and, thanks to its sheet steel cage, is suitable for demanding industrial applications.
The 32322 tapered roller bearing from FAG Wälzlager accommodates combined loads from the radial and single-direction axial directions. The rolling elements roll with low friction thanks to tapered raceways on the inner and outer rings. The design features an outer diameter of 240 mm and a width of 84.5 mm. With its sheet steel cage, this metric roller bearing maintains its dimensional stability even under varying operating conditions and guides the rollers evenly. The open design facilitates the supply of lubricant into the housing.
This roller bearing is used where heavy radial loads occur simultaneously with axial forces. Typical applications can be found in industrial gearboxes and drive systems in mechanical engineering. As single-row tapered roller bearings, by design, can only accommodate axial forces in one direction, designers usually install the components in pairs in an O or X arrangement with a mating bearing. This arrangement provides precise support for shafts and accommodates alternating axial loads.
The integrated sheet steel cage maintains a uniform spacing between the tapered rollers and prevents direct contact between the rolling elements. This reduces internal friction and minimises heat build-up during continuous operation. Furthermore, the use of steel allows for a wide range of applications at operating temperatures from -30 to +120 °C. During assembly, attention must be paid to the axial bearing clearance, which is only precisely adjusted during installation by aligning the bearing against the mating bearing.
Tapered roller bearings in this series simultaneously transmit high radial forces and single-direction axial forces. Thanks to the angled roller axes, the bearing effectively transfers the resulting shear forces to the surrounding housing. To counteract axial forces, in practice the bearing is usually fitted in a mirror-image configuration with a second bearing on the shaft.
The bearing has an outer diameter of 240 mm and a total width of 84.5 mm. These metric dimensions allow for a precise fit in standardised housing bores in industrial and mechanical engineering. Before fitting, check the installation space at the mounting location to ensure the bearing is correctly aligned.
The temperature operating range of the bearing is between -30 and +120 °C. This range is determined by the material stability of the rings, rollers and steel cage. For low-friction operation, it is recommended to use a grease or lubricating oil whose viscosity and specification are approved for this temperature range and the actual operating temperature.
Tapered roller bearings are not self-retaining. The inner ring, together with the roller cage and the cage, forms a single unit, whilst the outer ring remains separable. This makes it possible to press the inner ring and outer ring onto the shaft and housing independently of one another, which simplifies installation in the workshop.
Unlike radial ball bearings, the bearing clearance in this tapered roller bearing is not fixed as a result of the manufacturing process. The operating clearance or preload is only created during assembly by the axial alignment against a second bearing. Technicians adjust this value using shims, shaft nuts or adjusting screws in accordance with the specifications of the respective design.
A sheet steel cage is characterised by high strength combined with low weight, and is resistant to mechanical stresses and common industrial lubricants. It keeps the rolling elements on track and is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +120 °C without becoming brittle or losing its dimensional stability.
