The SKF 31310 tapered roller bearing, with main dimensions of 50 × 110 × 29.25 mm, is designed to withstand high radial loads as well as unilateral axial loads in machinery and gearbox construction.
The 31310 tapered roller bearing is a single-row rolling bearing in a standard design, manufactured by SKF in the Explorer performance class. As a complete tapered roller bearing, it comprises the inner ring with a set of rollers and the corresponding outer ring. Due to the tapered arrangement of the rolling elements, the bearing is suitable for combined load transmission in the radial and single-direction axial directions. With a bore of 50 mm, an outside diameter of 110 mm and a width of 29.25 mm, this design covers tried-and-tested mounting spaces in industrial machinery.
The 31310 tapered roller bearing is primarily used in gearboxes, shaft mountings and industrial powertrains where radial and axial forces act simultaneously. As single-row tapered roller bearings can only accommodate axial loads in one direction, they are usually fitted in a mirror-image configuration opposite a second bearing. The SKF Explorer design ensures even load distribution across the rolling elements. Typical applications include situations where rigid shaft support is required and an operating temperature range of –30 to +120 degrees must be covered.
The integrated sheet steel cage guides the tapered rollers stably on the inner ring and withstands mechanical stresses during standard operation. In combination with tolerance class P0/PN, which also corresponds to ABEC 1, this bearing meets common precision requirements in general mechanical engineering. When designing the assembly, it is important to note that tapered roller bearings are not self-retaining: the inner and outer rings can be fitted separately, whilst the bearing clearance is only adjusted axially during final installation. An adequate supply of lubricant is essential for operational reliability.
With an internal diameter of 50 mm, an external diameter of 110 mm and a total width of 29.25 mm, the 31310 tapered roller bearing offers standardised mounting dimensions. These key dimensions determine the required installation space on the shaft and within the housing. Before assembly, check that the connecting structure is dimensionally accurate to ensure a precise fit.
A single-row tapered roller bearing accommodates combined loads consisting of radial and axial forces. The truncated conical rollers run on inclined raceways, enabling the bearing to support axial forces in one direction. To accommodate axial forces acting in opposite directions, designers usually fit a second bearing in a mirror-image arrangement on the same shaft.
Classification in tolerance class P0/PN corresponds to the standard normal tolerance for rolling bearings and is comparable to the ABEC 1 classification. It defines the permissible dimensional, geometric and running accuracies for rings and rollers. This precision grade is suitable for the vast majority of applications in conventional mechanical engineering, gearbox manufacturing and general industrial drives.
The permissible temperature range for this tapered roller bearing is between -30 and +120 degrees. The dimensional stability of the rings and the sheet steel cage is maintained within this range. When selecting a lubricant, ensure that the grease or oil used is approved for the actual operating temperatures of your system.
As the inner ring, together with the roller set, and the outer ring are supplied separately, fit both components into the housing and onto the shaft separately. You should only adjust the internal operating clearance or the desired preload during assembly by applying axial preload to both bearing rings. Correct alignment protects the raceways from premature wear.
A sheet steel cage is characterised by high strength whilst taking up minimal space. It guides the rolling elements precisely over the inner ring flange and allows unimpeded lubricant flow to the contact surfaces. Furthermore, the sheet steel cage can withstand the entire permissible temperature range from -30 to +120 degrees without thermal deformation.
