The SKF 1218 K/C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing, with a tapered bore and increased C3 clearance, compensates for misalignment caused by shaft deflection in the dimensions 90x160x30 mm.
This open SKF 1218 K/C3 self-aligning ball bearing is suitable for industrial applications involving misalignment. Thanks to the hollow-spherical outer ring raceway, the two rows of balls self-align during operation. The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements at temperatures ranging from –30 to +150 degrees. The component, made from 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, complies with tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1 and accommodates radial forces.
Design engineers and maintenance personnel use this self-aligning bearing primarily on long shafts where manufacturing-related misalignments or load-induced deflections occur. The double-row design compensates for angular misalignment between the inner and outer rings without increasing frictional resistance. Typical applications can be found in general mechanical engineering as well as in bearing arrangements with elastic shaft deflection. The open design allows for flexible lubrication with oil or grease via the surrounding housing structure.
The suffix ‘K’ denotes the tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12. This design facilitates mounting on tapered shaft seats or, using suitable mounting and withdrawal sleeves, on cylindrical shafts. The increased C3 bearing clearance compensates for the expansion of the inner ring during mounting. At the same time, this clearance provides thermal reserves to accommodate temperature differences between the inner and outer rings. During assembly, care must be taken to adjust the remaining operating radial clearance accurately.
A shared hollow spherical raceway in the outer ring allows both rows of balls to self-align in the event of shaft misalignment. The combination of a tapered bore and increased radial clearance (C3) facilitates mounting on adapter sleeves and reduces the risk of the rolling elements seizing under the influence of heat.
With an internal diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 160 mm and a width of 30 mm, the bearing complies with standard dimensions. The bore has a taper of 1:12. The component, made from 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel, complies with tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1.
This suffix indicates a tapered bore with a ratio of 1:12. The component can be fitted either directly onto a tapered shaft seat or, using a collet, onto a cylindrical shaft. This ensures a secure fit and simplifies removal when maintenance is required.
Prior to installation, the increased radial bearing clearance (C3) compensates for the expansion of the inner ring that occurs when it is press-fitted axially onto the tapered seat. This reduces the bearing clearance. The C3 design helps to ensure that, after assembly, sufficient operating clearance is maintained to allow for smooth running.
The permissible operating range is between -30 and +150 degrees. Both the dimensionally stable sheet steel cage and the roller bearing steel can withstand these temperatures without any changes to their microstructure. The lubricant used must be suitable for this temperature range, as this is an open design without integrated sealing washers.
As this roller bearing is of an open design, the lubricant is supplied via the surrounding housing. Either grease or lubricating oil may be used. An external seal on the housing protects the raceways from foreign particles and moisture, and keeps the lubricant within the bearing chamber.
