The SKF 1208 EKTN9/C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing features a 40 mm bore diameter, a tapered fit and reliable compensation for static and dynamic misalignment.
The 1208 EKTN9/C3 double-row self-aligning ball bearing automatically compensates for misalignment between the shaft and housing. SKF manufactures this open rolling bearing from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel, with key dimensions of 40 mm inner diameter, 80 mm outer diameter and 18 mm width. A shared hollow-spherical raceway in the outer ring enables the two rows of balls to move angularly. A lightweight polyamide cage guides the rolling elements with low vibration within the specified temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees.
This bearing is primarily recommended for designs where shaft deflection or misalignment may occur. Relevant applications are found in general mechanical engineering for bearing arrangements with longer shafts. As the component is designed as an open bearing, it can be flexibly lubricated with grease or oil via an external lubrication system. This design is suitable for operating conditions involving moderate speeds and thermal fluctuations within the standard range of tolerance class P0/PN.
The tapered bore, with a taper ratio of 1:12, allows for mounting directly onto cylindrical shafts using a clamping or withdrawal sleeve. During the mounting process, the internal bearing clearance is measurably reduced. The slightly increased C3 radial bearing clearance, which is a standard feature, compensates for this operational reduction in clearance during installation and also accommodates thermal expansion during operation. A polyamide cage reduces friction and promotes smooth running.
Two rows of balls run on a shared spherical outer ring raceway, which compensates for any misalignment of the shaft. This design features a tapered inner bore with a 1:12 taper, a slightly increased C3 clearance and a lightweight polyamide cage for smooth operation at a nominal diameter of 40 mm.
The bearing has a bore diameter of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 80 mm and a width of 18 mm. The tolerance class is the standard P0 or ABEC 1 specification, made from standard roller bearing steel.
Class C3 denotes a slightly increased initial bearing clearance compared with the standard CN version. As mounting the tapered inner ring on shaft sleeves results in a reduction in radial clearance, the C3 clearance prevents the rolling elements from being clamped too tightly during operation.
Tapered ball bearings are usually mounted using adapter sleeves or directly onto tapered shaft seats. The axial travel specifically reduces the radial bearing clearance, enabling a secure fit without the need for additional shaft shoulders.
The component is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. The upper limit is largely determined by the polyamide cage used in its construction, making this model suitable for standard industrial operating temperatures.
As an open version, the bearing is supplied from the factory without sealing washers and is unlubricated. Before commissioning, it requires application-specific lubrication with grease or lubricating oil, as well as a housing that is protected against the ingress of dirt.
