The SKF 6209 /C3 deep groove ball bearing is an open, single-row rolling bearing measuring 45x85x19 mm with increased clearance for demanding operating temperatures.
As a single-row radial ball bearing, the SKF 6209/C3 deep groove ball bearing primarily accommodates radial loads as well as moderate axial loads. Thanks to its open design without sealing washers, this rolling bearing is particularly suitable for enclosed gearbox housings or oil-lubricated systems where the lubricant circulates freely. The rings and rolling elements are made of standard rolling-element steel (100Cr6). In combination with the guided sheet steel cage, the bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees.
This rolling bearing is suitable for designs subject to high thermal loads or tighter fits, which reduce the radial operating clearance. Typical applications include electric motors, gearboxes and general industrial drives with centralised oil or grease lubrication. As the bearing is of an open design, the surrounding housing structure protects the raceways from dirt and moisture. Manufacture to the Normal tolerance class (P0/PN or ABEC 1) ensures reliable concentricity in standard mechanical and plant engineering.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This greater radial clearance compensates for thermal expansion between the inner and outer rings during operation, without the balls becoming jammed between the raceways. Similarly, the C3 bearing clearance compensates for the expansion of the inner ring when it has a fixed press fit on the shaft. Consider using this variant if temperature differences occur between the rotating shaft and the housing, or if higher speeds generate additional frictional heat.
The bearing has a bore of 45 mm, an outside diameter of 85 mm and a width of 19 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a ring groove.
In applications involving heating, the shaft and inner ring often expand more than the surrounding housing. The C3 bearing clearance provides additional radial play to ensure that the bearing does not become stressed or wear prematurely at operating temperature. It also reliably compensates for dimensional changes caused by tight shaft fits.
As open bearings are supplied by the manufacturer without sealing washers, they do not contain a permanent grease fill. Lubrication is provided by the surrounding system, for example via an oil bath, circulating oil lubrication or targeted initial greasing during assembly. The lubricant can reach the raceways and the sheet steel cage directly.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures between -20 and +150 degrees. This temperature range is due to the dimensional stability of the 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel used, as well as the durability of the sheet steel cage. It is essential to take this operating range into account when selecting the lubricant.
A sheet steel cage maintains a precise spacing between the rolling elements and prevents them from coming into contact with one another. The material is characterised by its low weight combined with high mechanical stability. Furthermore, the steel cage can easily withstand the maximum permissible temperature of 150 degrees and remains resistant to common industrial lubricants.
This roller bearing is manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0/PN, which corresponds to the ABEC 1 classification. This class defines the permissible dimensional and runout tolerances for standard industrial applications and enables reliable installation on shafts and housing seats machined in accordance with the relevant standards.
