The SKF 6408 deep groove ball bearing is an open, single-row rolling bearing with main dimensions of 40x110x27 mm, designed for radial and axial loads.
The 6408 deep groove ball bearing is a standardised radial deep groove ball bearing in accordance with standard tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. With a bore of 40 mm, an outside diameter of 110 mm and a width of 27 mm, this version belongs to the heavy-duty 64 series. The rolling bearing is made from standard bearing steel 100Cr6 and features a sheet steel cage. Due to its open design without sealing washers, the bearing is suitable for systems with external housing lubrication or oil bath operation within a temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius.
Design engineers and maintenance personnel primarily use the 6408 deep groove ball bearing where high radial forces and additional axial forces act in both directions. Thanks to the robust cross-sectional dimensions of the 64 series, the bearing offers a high load-carrying capacity with compact shaft diameters.
Applications can be found in general mechanical engineering as well as in bearing arrangements subject to combined loads. As the bearing is of an open design, it can be integrated directly into closed lubrication systems, where lubricating oil or external grease can reach the rolling elements unhindered.
When installing the 6408 deep groove ball bearing, ambient conditions and the lubricant supply must be taken into account. The standard radial clearance is designed for normal operating temperatures and standard fits, ensuring that the rolling elements run without excessive preload.
As this model has no integrated seals, protection against dirt and moisture must be provided by the housing design. In addition, a suitable lubrication system must be selected. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements and allows for operating temperatures between –20 and +120 degrees Celsius.
This deep-groove ball bearing has an inner diameter of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 110 mm and a width of 27 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical, without a groove or flange. With these standardised dimensions, the bearing can accommodate radial loads as well as axial loads in both directions.
An open bearing is supplied ex-works without either cover plates or sealing washers, leaving the rolling elements and the sheet-steel cage freely accessible. This design allows for direct lubrication via housing lubrication or circulating oil lubrication. At the same time, its use requires the housing to be sealed externally to prevent the ingress of dirt particles.
The standard radial bearing clearance defines the clearance between the inner ring, outer ring and rolling elements when the bearing is unmounted. It is designed for standard applications with typical shaft and housing fits, as well as moderate operating temperatures. This ensures smooth running with minimal friction during normal operation.
The permissible temperature range for this rolling bearing is between -20 and +120 degrees Celsius. This range is determined by the thermal dimensional stability of the 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the properties of the sheet steel cage. This temperature range must also be taken into account when selecting lubricants.
The bearing is manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0/PN, which corresponds to the ABEC 1 classification in the US. This tolerance class specifies the permissible dimensional, geometric and running accuracies and meets the requirements of standard mechanical and plant engineering in terms of dimensional accuracy and concentricity.
The inner ring, outer ring and balls are made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. This material is characterised by its strength, load-bearing capacity and wear resistance under rolling contact. The cage is made of sheet steel, which combines low mass with suitable running characteristics.
