The FAG 6228-C3 deep-groove ball bearing, measuring 140 × 250 × 42 mm and featuring increased bearing clearance, offers defined running characteristics for industrial applications subject to thermal stress.
The single-row deep groove ball bearing 6228 -C3 from FAG is an open radial ball bearing for heavy-duty shaft support in mechanical and plant engineering. It primarily accommodates radial loads and guides the shaft in both axial directions. The rings and rolling elements are made from standard rolling-bearing steel (100Cr6). The design, which has no flange or groove on the outer ring, allows for direct installation in cylindrical housing bores.
Large shaft diameters of 140 mm are typically used in heavy-duty shaft mountings subject to combined loads. As this bearing complies with the standard tolerance P0/PN (equivalent to ABEC 1), it fits into conventional machine frames with standard fits. The open design is ideal for applications where the bearing is lubricated directly via an existing oil bath or a centralised lubrication system. A guided sheet steel cage maintains an even spacing between the balls.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared to standard clearance. This design is recommended when temperature differences occur between the inner and outer rings during operation. Heat causes the inner ring to expand more, which could lead to stress with standard clearance. With C3 bearing clearance, the necessary operating clearance is maintained. Furthermore, the bearing covers a wide operating temperature range from -30 to +200 degrees, provided a suitable lubricant is used.
This radial ball bearing has an inside diameter of 140 mm, an outside diameter of 250 mm and a width of 42 mm. It is a single-row rolling bearing with a cylindrical bore and no mounting groove or flange on the outer ring.
The designation C3 indicates an increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This clearance prevents the rolling elements from becoming jammed if tight fits on the shaft or operational temperature differences between the inner and outer rings reduce the bearing clearance.
The open design has neither cover plates nor sealing discs. This allows lubricating oil or grease from a customer-supplied lubrication system to reach the raceways unimpeded. The lubricant can be easily replaced during operation, whilst the housing provides a seal against dirt.
The bearing is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees. The actual conditions of use are always determined by the resistance of the lubricant used and the thermal stability of the surrounding sealing elements within the unit.
The roller bearing complies with standard tolerance class P0 (also referred to as PN), which is equivalent to the international ABEC 1 classification. This manufacturing precision meets the standard requirements in general mechanical engineering.
The inner ring, outer ring and rolling elements are made of standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6). The rolling elements are guided by a dimensionally stable cage made of pressed sheet steel, which is suitable for standard lubrication methods and operating temperatures.
