The SKF 6218-Z deep groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 90 x 160 x 30 mm, is designed to accommodate radial and axial loads in mechanical engineering applications.
The 6218-Z deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing made from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel. It primarily supports radial forces and can guide shafts axially in both directions. The SKF version features a standard radial clearance and tolerance class P0/PN (corresponding to ABEC 1). A sheet steel cage keeps the rolling elements spaced apart and helps to ensure even load distribution during operation.
Design engineers primarily use this rolling bearing for medium to high loads, as well as in combined load conditions. Thanks to the combination of a 90 mm bore and a 160 mm outer diameter, the component can withstand considerable radial forces. As the design is rated for a temperature range of –20 to +150 degrees, it is also suitable for demanding thermal operating conditions. The cylindrical outer ring, which has no flange or groove, fits precisely into appropriately machined housing bores.
The suffix ‘Z’ denotes a non-contacting cover plate made of sheet steel on one side of the bearing. This protects the raceways from coarse dirt particles, but does not generate any additional frictional resistance during operation. The opposite, open side allows for relubrication or the passage of lubricants from inside the housing. During assembly, the side with the metal cover should be oriented towards the side where contamination is likely to occur.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 90 mm, an outside diameter of 160 mm and a width across flats of 30 mm. These main dimensions conform to standardised series for single-row radial deep-groove ball bearings and determine the required installation space on the shaft and in the housing.
The suffix ‘Z’ denotes a cover plate made of profiled sheet metal fitted on one side. This gap seal keeps coarse foreign particles away from the raceways without causing mechanical friction on the inner ring. The open side remains accessible to lubricant, which is why the bearing is often used in sealed housings.
The bearing is specified for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees. Both the bearing rings and the rolling elements, made from 100Cr6 bearing steel, as well as the dimensionally stable sheet steel cage, retain their dimensional stability within this range. You must take these temperature limits into account when selecting the lubricant.
This specification denotes the standard tolerance for dimensional and running accuracy of rolling bearings. P0, in accordance with the ISO standard, and ABEC 1, in accordance with the US standard, define the permissible deviations for bore, outer diameter and concentricity. They fully meet the requirements of conventional mechanical and plant engineering.
This model has standard radial bearing clearance. This standard value provides sufficient leeway for typical shaft and housing fit designs. After press-fitting, the operating clearance is such that the rolling elements can roll freely without undue stress.
The inner and outer rings, as well as the rolling elements, are made from through-hardened standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. This material is characterised by high fatigue strength and wear resistance. The balls are guided by a sheet steel cage designed to withstand dynamic loads.
