The SKF deep groove ball bearing 6218, with main dimensions of 90 × 160 × 30 mm, accommodates combined radial and axial loads in rotating shaft assemblies.
The 6218 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing from SKF’s Explorer performance class. Its open design primarily accommodates radial forces and supports shafts even when subjected to axial loads acting from both ends. Manufactured from roller bearing steel (100Cr6), with the inner ring, outer ring and rolling elements made from the same material, the component is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from –20 to +120 degrees Celsius. The cylindrical outer ring has no flange or ring groove.
This rolling bearing is used wherever shafts with a diameter of 90 mm need to be supported. It is utilised in designs involving combined loads in rotating machine shafts. The geometry of the deep raceways enables smooth running at moderate to higher speeds. As the component absorbs axial forces in both directions, it is frequently used as a fixed or floating bearing in enclosed housings.
As the 6218 deep-groove ball bearing is designed as an open bearing, it has no integrated seals or cover plates. The lubricant, usually oil or grease, is supplied via the housing system. Furthermore, this design requires a clean installation environment and external sealing elements on the housing covers to keep out contaminants. The standard radial bearing clearance, combined with tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1) and the sheet steel cage, facilitates the design of suitable shaft and housing seats.
With an internal diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 160 mm and a width of 30 mm, this roller bearing corresponds to the 6218 design. Thanks to these standardised dimensions, the component can be integrated directly into suitable housing designs or used as a spare part for bearing units of the same design.
Without factory-fitted cover plates or sealing washers, the open design allows direct access to the lubricant via a housing oil bath or grease. Its use requires a clean installation environment and external sealing of the bearing housing to prevent foreign particles and moisture from entering the raceways.
The standard radial bearing clearance refers to the factory-set radial clearance between the balls and raceways prior to installation. This setting is suitable for standard operating conditions and typical fits, where there are no excessive thermal dimensional changes between the shaft and housing to be compensated for.
The permissible operating temperature range for the bearing is between -20 and +120 degrees Celsius. This range covers the thermal conditions encountered in standard applications. The actual limits that can be achieved during operation also depend on the temperature stability of the selected lubricant and the external seal.
In the bearing, a sheet steel cage keeps the rolling elements at a uniform distance apart and prevents direct contact between the balls. The cage is characterised by its low weight and dimensional stability, and is suitable for all common types of lubrication.
The designation P0 corresponds to the standard tolerance for rolling bearings and is comparable to the ABEC 1 classification. It specifies the permissible deviations in terms of dimensional accuracy and concentricity. This accuracy class meets the requirements of general mechanical engineering for standardised bearing seats.
