The SKF 6208/C3 deep-groove ball bearing, measuring 40x80x18 mm and featuring increased C3 clearance, ensures reliable operation under thermal expansion.
This single-row deep groove ball bearing 6208 /C3 from SKF primarily accommodates radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions. Thanks to its open design without sealing washers, the component is particularly suitable for environments where an external lubrication system using oil or grease is already in place. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 in combination with a lightweight sheet steel cage, it supports low-vibration operation in industrial plants.
Design engineers primarily choose this design for bearing locations where higher operating temperatures arise during operation. With a permissible temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees, the design is suited to demanding thermal conditions. As there are no integrated seals to generate frictional heat, the bearing runs with low resistance even at higher speeds. An external housing seal serves to keep out dirt particles.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance as supplied. If the shaft and inner ring heat up more than the surrounding housing during operation, the material expands. The additional bearing clearance compensates for this radial play without the rolling elements becoming jammed or subjected to excessive stress. Combined with the standard tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1), you receive a dimensionally accurate rolling bearing for a precise fit in shaft seats.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 80 mm and a width of 18 mm. The outer ring has no flange or groove, which means the bearing can be fitted flush with cylindrical housing bores.
The designation C3 indicates a greater radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This increased radial clearance counteracts internal stress in the bearing should temperature differences arise between the inner and outer rings, or should tight press fits reduce the operating clearance after installation.
An open bearing has neither seals nor cover plates at its ends. Lubricants can reach the rolling elements unhindered, which is why this design is recommended for oil bath lubrication or centralised grease lubrication. An external housing seal is required to protect against foreign matter.
The component is specified for operating temperatures between -20 and +150 degrees. Both the raceways and the rolling elements, made from standard 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel, and the dimensionally stable sheet-steel cage retain their dimensional stability and load-carrying capacity within this range.
Inside, a sheet steel cage guides the balls at a uniform spacing. This type of cage is characterised by its low weight, takes up little space inside the bearing, and is suitable for standard mineral lubricating oils and greases.
The model is manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0 (equivalent to PN or ABEC 1). This class defines precise manufacturing tolerances for roundness, run-out and diameter, which cover the vast majority of all industrial precision requirements for machinery and shafts.
