The SKF 16004 deep groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 20x42x8 mm, offers a space-saving solution for precision rotating shafts.
With the 16004 deep groove ball bearing, you are choosing a single-row radial ball bearing in an exceptionally narrow design. It accommodates radial forces as well as moderate axial loads in both directions. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel in the SKF Explorer design, this component features an optimised internal geometry. The open design allows for direct lubricant supply from the surrounding system, whilst the robust sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly.
Compact rolling bearings of this type are primarily used where axial installation space is severely limited. Thanks to its narrow width of 8 mm, the 16004 deep groove ball bearing fits into slim housing designs and compact drives. As it is open at both ends, it is particularly suitable for enclosed assemblies with circulating oil lubrication or central grease supply. Design engineers use this bearing type in general mechanical engineering for the precise mounting of intermediate shafts and rotating elements with a narrow installation width.
In demanding applications, minimal dimensional deviations are crucial. This model combines dimensional accuracy in accordance with tolerance class P6 with even finer running accuracy in accordance with class P5. Compared with the standard tolerance, the lower radial runout error reduces vibrations occurring during operation. Together with the standard radial bearing clearance, the manufacturing precision contributes to smooth running. When machining the shaft and housing, ensure that the fits are tailored to these tight manufacturing tolerances.
This roller bearing has a bore of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 42 mm and a width of 8 mm. Thanks to these compact dimensions, the bearing housing requires significantly less axial space compared with wider standard bearings of the same diameter.
Open bearings are supplied ex works without either cover plates or sealing washers. Lubricants from the surrounding housing reach the rolling elements and raceways unimpeded. The bearing location should be protected against the ingress of dust, dirt and moisture by means of external sealing elements such as shaft seals or labyrinth seals.
The component is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +120 degrees Celsius. Both the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability within this range. The thermal suitability of the selected lubricant within this temperature range is crucial for operation.
Dimensional accuracy complies with Class P6, whilst running accuracy is manufactured to the even tighter Class P5 standard. This means that deviations in the radial runout of the inner and outer rings are lower than in standard bearings. The result is improved guidance accuracy for rotating components.
The bearing has standard radial clearance. This standard operating clearance is designed for typical fit combinations and normal temperature differences between the shaft and the housing. After installation, the necessary operating clearance remains to prevent the balls from becoming jammed in the raceways.
The inner and outer rings, as well as the rolling elements, are made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6. The retainer is designed as a dimensionally stable sheet steel cage. This combination of materials offers high wear resistance and withstands the mechanical stresses of industrial use.
