The FAG 6003-Z deep groove ball bearing (17x35x10 mm) features a sheet metal cover on one side, providing protection against dirt whilst allowing lubrication from the open side.
The 6003-Z deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing, manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6). Fitted with a dimensionally stable sheet steel cage and standard bearing clearance, this component primarily accommodates radial loads as well as moderate axial loads in both directions. The version with the suffix ‘-Z’ features a non-contacting cover plate made of sheet steel on one side, whilst the opposite side remains open. This design combines basic dust protection with flexible lubricant supply whilst the housing is in operation.
Design engineers and maintenance personnel prefer to use this bearing design in sealed housings and shaft mountings. The single-sided shielding protects the rolling elements from coarse particles from inside the housing, whilst the open side allows for the unhindered replacement of gear oil or relubrication grease. With compact main dimensions of 17 mm internal diameter and 35 mm external diameter, the unit is suitable for medium-speed drives where low friction and smooth running are required.
Compared to abrasive rubber seals, the metallic gap seal of the Z-disc generates no additional frictional torque. The shaft starts up with minimal resistance, which keeps temperature rise low at higher speeds. Installation depends on the specific application: The closed side typically faces the potential source of contamination, whilst the open side is mounted facing the lubricant reservoir. Thanks to tolerance class P0 (normal tolerance), the bearing fits precisely onto standardised shaft seats.
The bearing has a bore of 17 mm, an outside diameter of 35 mm and a total width of 10 mm. The cylindrical outer ring has no flange or groove. These standardised dimensions allow for direct installation in standardised bearing seats.
The ‘Z’ designation refers to a cover plate made of embossed sheet steel, fitted on one side. It acts as a non-contact gap seal against dirt particles. As the cover does not bear against the inner ring, rotational resistance remains minimal and the operating temperature is low.
Through the open rear end, grease or lubricating oil flows directly from the housing to the raceways and the sheet steel cage. The bearing can be lubricated prior to fitting or supplied continuously via an oil circulation system whilst in operation. The sealed cover helps to keep the lubricant inside the bearing housing.
Normal bearing clearance defines the radial clearance between the balls and raceways when the bearing is unmounted. It ensures that, under normal operating temperatures and with standard fits between the shaft and housing, the components can rotate freely without building up excessively high preload.
Both the solid rings and the rolling elements are made from standard 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel, which offers high material strength. The guided cage is made of stamped sheet steel. This combination of materials withstands mechanical vibrations and meets standard industrial requirements.
The component is manufactured to tolerance class P0, which corresponds to standard class PN or ABEC 1. This level of manufacturing accuracy meets the requirements for concentricity, dimensional accuracy and guidance precision for standard industrial applications.
