The FAG NU230 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing is an open, single-row idler bearing with a brass cage, designed for shaft diameters of 150 mm.
The NU230 -E-M1 cylindrical roller bearing is characterised by a high radial load capacity with dimensions of 150 mm bore, 270 mm outer diameter and 45 mm width. Designed as an open rolling bearing, this version is suitable for lubricated assemblies in general mechanical engineering and in industrial drive systems. Thanks to the line contact between the rollers and raceways, the design can withstand very high radial forces.
This cylindrical roller bearing is primarily used to support high radial loads in industrial gearboxes and machine designs with a separate fixed and idler bearing arrangement. In the NU design, the unit functions purely as an idler bearing. The inner ring has no flanges and can be removed axially from both sides during assembly. As a result, the bearing compensates for operational length changes in the shaft due to thermal expansion with low friction within the bearing, without axial constraint stresses being exerted on the adjacent structure.
The solid brass cage guides the cylindrical rollers precisely within the raceway, even under vibration and shock loads. Brass withstands high mechanical stresses and is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +150 degrees. As the outer ring is manufactured without a lubrication groove or lubrication bore, the lubricant is supplied via the surrounding housing structure. The design in tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1) complies with the standardised specifications for common fits.
In the NU design, the outer ring has two fixed guide flanges, whilst the inner ring is manufactured without flanges. This allows the inner ring to be removed axially from both sides, which facilitates assembly. This design acts as a non-locating bearing and compensates for temperature-induced changes in the shaft’s length without restriction; however, it does not absorb any axial forces.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 150 mm, an outer diameter of 270 mm and a width of 45 mm. It is a single-row cylindrical roller bearing with a tolerance class of P0 or ABEC 1. The outer ring has a smooth finish, i.e. without an integrated lubrication groove or lubrication bore.
The designation M1 refers to a solid brass cage which guides the cylindrical rolling elements and keeps them spaced apart. Brass is characterised by high strength, good run-on properties and vibration damping. This makes the component suitable for operating conditions involving high speeds, impacts or strong acceleration forces.
A thrust bearing absorbs only radial forces and allows for axial movement between the shaft and the housing. This prevents harmful stresses that may arise due to thermal expansion during operation. In contrast, a fixed bearing locks the shaft axially in both directions and transmits both radial and axial loads.
This open roller bearing is specified for an operating temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. As no sealing washers are fitted at the factory, the actual thermal operating limit depends largely on the lubricant used in the surrounding structure. Grease or lubricating oil must be selected to suit the prevailing operating temperatures.
Standard radial bearing clearance is used to specify the radial clearance between the rolling elements and raceways when the bearing is in its unassembled state. This standard bearing clearance ensures smooth running under normal shaft and housing fits and at typical operating temperatures, without causing the rolling elements to jam.
