The SKF 7316 BEP angular contact ball bearing, with an 80 mm bore and a 40-degree contact angle, provides robust guidance for combined loads.
The 7316 BEP angular contact ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6), which accommodates radial forces and unidirectional axial forces. With key dimensions of 80 mm inner diameter, 170 mm outer diameter and 39 mm width, the component has a tolerance class of P0/PN (ABEC 1) and standard radial clearance. SKF manufactures this open bearing for designs where an external lubrication supply and sealing within the housing are provided. The design is characterised by the polyamide cage, which guides the rolling elements with low vibration.
This single-row bearing is primarily suitable for shaft mountings subjected to high unilateral axial forces in addition to radial forces. Typical applications include industrial gearboxes and rotating drive shafts in general mechanical engineering. Users often fit this type in pairs in an O or X arrangement to accommodate opposing axial thrusts. Thanks to its temperature range of –20 to +120 degrees, the rolling bearing operates reliably provided it is suitably lubricated with oil or grease.
The suffix ‘BEP’ denotes two key design features: the 40-degree contact angle enables high axial force transmission in one direction, whilst the suffix also refers to the polyamide cage. This material reduces the weight and dampens operating noise compared to solid metal cages. It is important to note the open design without sealing washers, as well as the maximum operating temperature of +120 degrees, which is dictated by the material’s limitations.
The 7316 BEP angular contact ball bearing has a bore diameter of 80 mm, an outer diameter of 170 mm and a width of 39 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a groove. It is manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0/PN, which corresponds to the ABEC 1 standard.
The contact angle determines the direction of force transmission between the inner ring, the outer ring and the rolling elements. An angle of 40 degrees shifts the load line obliquely to the radial plane, enabling the bearing to accommodate not only radial forces but, above all, high axial loads in one direction. A paired arrangement is required for axial forces acting in both directions.
This roller bearing is specified for an operating temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees. The upper temperature limit is determined by the polyamide cage fitted, the material properties of which are designed for this temperature range. In addition, lubricants should be selected that retain their lubricating properties within this temperature range.
As this version does not have any integrated cover or sealing washers, the seal is provided by the surrounding housing structure. Users lubricate the bearing with roller bearing grease or oil, depending on the intended application. A functioning external seal protects the raceways, made from 100Cr6 roller bearing steel, against the ingress of dirt and moisture and prevents lubricant loss.
A polyamide cage guides the ball row of the bearing. Plastic cages are characterised by their low weight, elastic properties and the damping of running noise. They are suitable for standard applications up to a maximum of +120 degrees and help to ensure smooth running of the rolling elements.
The component is manufactured with standard radial bearing clearance. This designation refers to the standard clearance between the balls and raceways when the bearing is in its unassembled state. As this is a single-row angular contact ball bearing, the actual operating clearance or the desired preload is largely determined by the axial alignment during installation relative to a mating bearing.
