The SKF 7220 BEP angular contact ball bearing, with dimensions of 100 × 180 × 34 mm and a contact angle of 40 degrees, is specifically designed to accommodate combined loads.
The 7220 BEP angular contact ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing designed for applications involving combined radial and axial forces. Thanks to the raceways of the inner and outer rings being offset at an angle to one another, this design accommodates unidirectional axial loads together with radial loads. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), this version has a bore of 100 mm, an outside diameter of 180 mm and a width of 34 mm. The open bearing is suitable for lubricated systems in industrial drives.
This rolling bearing is used wherever rotating shafts have to withstand high radial forces and, at the same time, axial forces in one direction. Typical applications include gearbox shafts, pump drives, compressors and general mechanical engineering. As this is an open bearing, it can be integrated directly into oil circuits or into housings sealed on site. For varying axial loads, a second counter-bearing is usually fitted in a matched arrangement.
The 40-degree contact angle determines the line of action of the forces and enables the bearing to accommodate significant axial forces compared to smaller angles. The designation BEP also refers to the optimised internal geometry and the lightweight polyamide cage. This material reduces the cage’s own weight and ensures low-vibration, quiet operation within a temperature range of –20 to +120 degrees. The tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1 and standard radial bearing clearance ensure reliable standard installation.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 100 mm, an outside diameter of 180 mm and a width of 34 mm. These standardised key dimensions facilitate design for use on load-bearing shafts and in housing bores. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has no flanges or grooves.
This designation indicates an optimised internal design with a contact angle of 40 degrees and a lightweight polyamide cage. This cage design ensures low-friction movement of the rolling elements and is suitable for operating temperatures between -20 and +120 degrees. As a result, the bearing operates with low vibration and quietly.
Due to their design, single-row versions can only accommodate axial loads in one direction. The forces act at an angle to the radial plane via the angular contact raceways. If alternating or bidirectional axial forces occur during operation, you must install a second bearing in a mirror-image configuration, for example in an O or X arrangement.
Open roller bearings do not have integrated cover plates or sealing rings. They allow lubricating oil or grease to pass through unimpeded within enclosed machine housings. This design is recommended where the housing already has external shaft seals or where the bearing is integrated into a central lubrication system.
The permissible operating range is from -20 to +120 degrees. This range is primarily limited by the polyamide cage used, which remains dimensionally stable and elastic within these temperature limits. For applications involving different continuous operating temperatures, designers should consider alternative cage materials such as brass or sheet steel.
The angular contact ball bearing is manufactured with standard radial clearance and complies with tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. This corresponds to the established industry standard for general mechanical engineering applications. In the case of single-row angular contact ball bearings, the actual axial operating clearance is only achieved through precise adjustment during installation against the mating bearing.
